Design and synthesis of fluorescent peptide-based probes with aggregation-induced emission characteristic for detecting CH3Hg+ and Hg2+ in aqueous environment: Tuning fluorescent detection for CH3Hg+ by replacing peptide receptors

Hyeongseok Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, fluorescent probes were developed to reversibly detect methylmercury and mercury ions in water. Among the probes, probe 7 showed the best detection performance with high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg2+ and CH3Hg+. These probes provide a useful approach for the detection of inorganic and organic mercury.

Improvement of the photostability of cycloalkylamine-7-sulfonyl-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole-based fluorescent dyes by replacing the dimethylamino substituent with cyclic amino rings

Pramod Kumar Mehta et al.

Summary: The development of visible light-excitable fluorophores with long wavelength emission has gained significant attention due to their extensive applications in fluorescence imaging techniques. In this study, we designed and synthesized several analogues of N,N-dimethylamine-7-sulfonyl-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (ABD) with varying sizes of cyclic amine. These ABD analogue-labelled amino acids showed good solubility in different solvents and exhibited higher brightness and quantum yield in aprotic solvents. Lippert-Mataga plots suggested that the polarizability of the excited state of the fluorophores depended on the nature of the solvents. Substituting the dimethylamino group with 3- and 4-membered cyclic amine rings significantly enhanced the photostability of the fluorescent probes under visible light and UV irradiation, resulting in increased brightness and fluorescence lifetime.

Ratiometric fluorescent detection of Hg(II) by amino-acid based fluorescent chemodosimeter using irreversible reaction of phenylboronic acid with mercury species

Sumita Subedi et al.

Summary: A new ratiometric fluorescent chemodosimeter for Hg2+ was developed based on an irreversible reaction of phenylboronic acid with Hg2+, showing selective and sensitive signal behavior to low concentrations of Hg2+ ions. The real-world application demonstrated quantification of Hg2+ ions in groundwater and tap water samples spiked with known amounts of Hg2+ ions, showcasing its potential environmental and biological sensing applications.

A new ratiometric fluorescent chemodosimeter for sensing of Hg2+ in water using irreversible reaction of arylboronic acid with Hg2+

Sumita Subedi et al.

Summary: A highly selective ratiometric fluorescent chemodosimeter was synthesized for the detection of Hg2+, which showed remarkable detection properties including high selectivity and sensitivity, large fluorescent signal changes, and well-operation in aqueous solutions. The displacement reaction between phenylboronic acid and Hg2+ ions provided a covalent adduct of mercury ion, leading to significant fluorescent signal changes when aggregated in aqueous solution. With a low detection limit of 15.2 nM, nanomolar concentrations of Hg2+ could be successfully detected, providing a ratiometric fluorescent detection method for quantifying low levels of Hg2+ in groundwater and tap water samples.
