Gas sensors and factors influencing sensing mechanism with a special focus on MOS sensors

Surface engineering/morphological tuning and bulk and surface doping are highlighted as schemes for improving gas sensing properties. The review concludes by summarizing the most optimized MOS gas sensors with enhanced capabilities.

Flexible, Low-Cost, and Room Temperature Ammonia Sensor Based on Polypyrrole and Functionalized MWCNT Nanocomposites in Extreme Bending Conditions

Summary: We present a flexible and room temperature ammonia sensor using polypyrrole/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Ppy/f-MWCNTs). The nanocomposite was synthesized by in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization and loaded on a transparent poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane substrate. The flexible sensor fabrication process was cost-effective and easy to operate. The optimized Ppy/f-MWCNT-based sensor showed improved sensing characteristics and high response toward ammonia, with good repeatability and long-term stability. This flexible sensor could be applied in wearable devices to detect ammonia in the ambient environment.

Conductive polythiophene/graphitic-carbon nitride nanocomposite for the detection of ethanol mixing in petrol

Summary: Automobile vehicles should not use fuel with more than 10% ethanol, as it could cause engine malfunction, starting and running issues, and material degradation, resulting in irreversible damage. The current study presents a novel method of measuring ethanol mixing in petrol using polythiophene/graphitic-carbon nitride (PTh/gC(3)N(4)) nanocomposites and their DC electrical conductivity. Various analytical techniques confirmed the structure and morphology of the nanocomposites. The sensing response of PTh/g-C3N4 nanocomposites was 6.1 times higher than PTh, with a lower detection limit of 0.005 v/v% ethanol in petrol.

Ammonia gas-sensing behavior of uniform nanostructured PPy film prepared by simple-straightforward in situ chemical vapor oxidation

Summary: A highly uniform nanostructured polypyrrole (PPy) film was prepared by a simple chemical vapor oxidation method and shown to be a sensitive substrate for NH3 gas sensing. The structure of the PPy film was studied using SEM, EDS, and XRD. The functional groups of the PPy film were examined using Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The PPy film exhibited excellent linear response and high selectivity towards NH3, with a maximum sensing response of 142.6% when exposed to 350 ppm of NH3 gas at room temperature.

Hydrogen gas sensing feature of polypyrrole nanofibers assisted by spinel ZnMn2O4 microspheres in dynamic conditions

Summary: In this study, spinel ZnMn(2)O(4) microspheres (ZMO) were synthesized and used to decorate DBSA doped-Polypyrrole nanofibers for the fabrication of nanocomposites. The gas sensing properties of the nanocomposite films were investigated, and it was found that the sample with 5% ZMO showed the best response, response time, and long-term stability.

Studies on the synthesis and characterization of zeolite-LTL/PPy composite for gas sensing application

Summary: Zeolite nanoparticles were synthesized using the hydrothermal method and chemically polymerized to create a zeolite polypyrrole polymer nanocomposite. This nanocomposite was used as a gas sensing material and demonstrated the ability to detect ammonia at a concentration as low as 1 ppm, with a response and recovery time of less than a minute. The nanocomposite also showed a high sensitivity of 12.34 ppm(-1). Additionally, it exhibited a degradation efficiency of up to 79.4% for methylene blue dye under UV light. Powder X-ray diffraction confirmed the crystalline nature of the materials, and scanning electron microscope images revealed the unique structure and morphology of the zeolite and polypyrrole components.
