Transient instability in long, tilted water columns with fast-settling, particle-laden layers

Yu-Jen Chang et al.

Summary: The stability of unsteady particle-laden flows in long, tilted water columns was studied. It was found that the base flow increases as the settling speed decreases and reaches its maximum when the speed becomes infinitesimal. Disturbance flow energy experiences algebraic and exponential growth, with flow instability increasing with the Prandtl number and decreasing with settling speed. An optimal tilted angle for efficient sedimentation was identified.

Shear-induced gradient diffusivity of a red blood cell suspension: effects of cell dynamics from tumbling to tank-treading

Abhilash Reddy Malipeddi et al.

Summary: Hydrodynamic interactions result in diffusive motion of particles in a shear flow, affecting particle rheology and microstructure. This study examines shear induced diffusion in RBC suspensions, revealing different cell dynamics regimes based on cell flexibility. The transition from tumbling to tank-treading reduces gradient diffusivity, while further increase in capillary number increases diffusivity due to deformation. The findings provide insights into suspensions of deformable particles and their potential applications.
