P-type (CuTi)Ox Thin Films Deposited by Magnetron Co-Sputtering and Their Electronic and Hydrogen Sensing Properties

Ewa Mankowska et al.

Summary: Thin films of copper oxide (CuxO), titanium oxide (TiOx), and mixtures of copper and titanium oxides ((CuTi)Ox) were prepared by magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of TiO crystallites in the TiOx film, metallic Cu crystallites in the (CuTi)Ox film with low copper content, and metallic copper and copper oxides in the (Cu0.77Ti0.23)Ox and CuxO films. Post-annealing significantly influenced the microstructure, with anatase phase observed in the (Cu0.23Ti0.77)Ox and (Cu0.41Ti0.59)Ox films, and copper oxide phase in the (Cu0.77Ti0.23)Ox and CuxO films. The (Cu0.77Ti0.23)Ox film annealed at 473 K exhibited the highest opto-electronic performance, with superior transmission, lowest resistivity, and strong p-type semiconducting behavior indicated by the Seebeck coefficient. All films showed sensitivity to hydrogen exposure, with the (Cu0.77Ti0.23)Ox film annealed at 473 K demonstrating the best sensor response of 10.9.

Shape selective comprehensive gas sensing study of different morphological manganese-cobalt oxide based nanocomposite as potential room temperature hydrogen gas sensor

Banalata Maji et al.

Summary: The shape selective analysis of four different morphological spinel structures supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as an efficient hydrogen sensor is reported in this study. It was found that the response of manganese-cobalt oxides is strongly dependent on the morphology of the system, which can be explained by the combined effects of surface area, surface defects, and crystallinity. The improved sensing behavior of the composite with rGO can be attributed to its higher electrical conductivity and fast charge carrier mobility.

Understanding on the hydrogen detection of plasma sprayed tin oxide/tungsten oxide (SnO2/WO3) sensor

V Ambardekar et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the hydrogen gas sensing performances of plasma sprayed SnO2/WO3 coatings in comparison to stand-alone WO3 and SnO2 coatings. The results show that the SnO2/WO3 sensor exhibits a maximum response of 90% at a lower operating temperature compared to the individual WO3 and SnO2 sensors. The SnO2/WO3 sensor also demonstrates selective sensing towards hydrogen gas and possesses stable base resistance and repeatable characteristics.

Thermal oxidation impact on the optoelectronic and hydrogen sensing properties of p-type copper oxide thin films

Damian Wojcieszak et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the effect of post-process annealing on copper oxide thin films and finds that annealing causes the formation of nanowires in the films. The optimum annealing temperature for nanowire growth is 350°C. Annealing also affects the transparency and resistivity of the films, with higher annealing temperatures resulting in lower resistivity.

TiO2/Cu2O/CuO Multi-Nanolayers as Sensors for H2 and Volatile Organic Compounds: An Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

Oleg Lupan et al.

Summary: TiO2/Cu2O/CuO multi-nanolayers grown by a spray-sputtering-annealing approach exhibited high sensitivity towards VOCs and H2, with sensors containing 20 to 30 nm thick CuO/Cu2O nanolayers showing a strong response to ethanol vapor. Additionally, the transition in response from ethanol vapor to hydrogen gas was observed as the thickness of the CuO/Cu2O nanolayers changed. The study also investigated the sensing mechanism and heteroepitaxial interfaces through computational analysis, providing insights into the practical applications of the multi-nanolayered films as reliable gas sensors.
