The hematological impact of umbilical cord milking versus delayed cord clamping in premature neonates: a randomized controlled trial

Summary: The study compared the hematological impact of umbilical cord milking (UCM) and delayed cord clamping (DCC) in preterm neonates, and found that UCM was as effective as DCC in facilitating placental transfusion. The DUC trial: a pilot randomized controlled trial of immediate versus delayed cord clamping in preterm infants born between 24 and 32 weeks gestation

Summary: The study showed that a short delay in umbilical cord clamping (30-45 s) is feasible for women and physicians. The incidence of IVH and sepsis was the same in both groups, but a higher percentage of the ICC group required a blood transfusion, while the DCC group had a slightly lower incidence of hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy. Further larger scale studies of long term outcomes are warranted.
