Platelet count and function in umbilical cord blood versus peripheral blood in term neonates

Alexander K. Grevsen et al.

Summary: Platelet function in term neonatal umbilical cord blood is similar to that in peripheral blood in terms of count and surface GP expression, but differ in terms of activation and aggregation.

Neonatal blood culture inoculant volume: feasibility and challenges

Emily C. Woodford et al.

Summary: The majority of neonates receive adequate inoculant volumes during sepsis evaluations. Monitoring inoculant volumes can help in improving test reliability and accuracy. Areas for improvement include late-onset sepsis evaluations in preterm infants and distribution techniques during inoculation.

Suitability of Placental Blood Samples of Newborns for Pre-Transfusion Testing

Rana Alissa et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the concordance between umbilical cord blood and heel stick blood samples for pre-transfusion testing in newborns and validated the tube and gel methodology for placental blood. Placental blood was found suitable for pre-transfusion testing and can be used as a replacement for heel sticks. The tube and gel methods for placental blood were also validated in this study.

Feasibility and accuracy of cord blood sampling for admission laboratory investigations: A pilot trial

Poliana De B. Medeiros et al.

Summary: The study found that using umbilical blood samples from umbilical arterial and venous (UAB/UVB) is feasible and accurate compared to blood collected from newborns. This method reduces phlebotomy losses and allows for higher blood volume collection, potentially increasing the sensitivity of blood culture collection.
