The Mesoscale Gravity Wave Response to the 2022 Tonga Volcanic Eruption: AIRS and MLS Satellite Observations and Source Backtracing

Summary: On January 15, 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted violently, causing atmospheric waves. In this study, we focus on the mesoscale part of the wave spectrum. About 8.5 hours after the eruption, a strong atmospheric gravity wave (GW) was observed in the stratosphere near Tonga by the satellite instruments AIRS and MLS. Through ray-tracing, we confirm the eruption as the source of this GW event. We determine the wave characteristics of the GW in terms of horizontal and vertical wavelengths and GW momentum flux. The strength of the GW is compared to the usual Southern Hemisphere flux values during that week. The event is comparable to the strongest convective events observed by MLS and exceptionally strong considering AIRS, which observes faster waves only.

Summary: Intra-oceanic arcs are typically associated with intermediate cone volcanoes, but caldera volcanoes may also form in these settings. Hunga volcano is a large mainly submarine edifice that produced a series of caldera-forming eruptions. Numerous smaller-scale eruptions have occurred since then, forming new islands in 2009 and 2014/15. The composition of the recent eruptions is similar to the caldera-forming episodes.

Global fast-traveling tsunamis driven by atmospheric Lamb waves on the 2022 Tonga eruption

Summary: On January 15, 2022, the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha`apai volcano caused tsunamis, with the generation of the tsunami forerunner related to fast-moving atmospheric Lamb waves and subsequent tsunamis related to bathymetric variations in the Pacific Ocean. The tsunamis caused by this volcanic eruption are more complex and longer-lasting than ordinary earthquake-induced tsunamis.

Visualizing Global Seismic Phases with AlpArray
