New Perspectives on Glacial Geomorphology in Earth's Deep Time Record

D. P. Le Heron et al.

Summary: Studying the deep time glacial record is crucial for understanding the long-term changes of the global cryosphere. While sedimentological description and interpretation have traditionally been important, new technologies such as aerial and satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicles, and 3D rendering software offer new opportunities for insights. This paper showcases examples from different time periods and regions where these approaches have revolutionized the understanding of ancient glaciations.

Reconsidering the glaciogenic origin of Gondwana diamictites of the Dwyka Group, South Africa

Mats O. Molen et al.

Summary: This study reinterprets the formation process of the Gondwana Late Palaeozoic Ice Age based on investigations and analyses of rocks in the Dwyka Group area in South Africa. The results suggest that the striated and grooved surfaces previously considered to be formed by glacial actions were more likely the result of sediment gravity flows. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy analysis of quartz sand grains in the rocks revealed surface microtextures that do not match the characteristics of glacial deposits.

Evaluation of physical and chemical proxies used to interpret past glaciations with a focus on the late Paleozoic Ice Age

John L. Isbell et al.

Summary: The late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) lasted for over 100 million years and has two competing hypotheses about the nature of glaciation during this period. The traditional view suggests a continuous glacial event, while the emerging hypothesis proposes multiple ice sheets and alternating glacial events with non-glacial intervals. Various proxies are used to define the ice age, with complexities and nuances that make interpretation challenging.

Provenance of late Paleozoic glacial/post-glacial deposits in the eastern Chaco-Parana Basin, Uruguay and southernmost Parana Basin, Brazil

Nicholas D. Fedorchuk et al.

Summary: This study utilized U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology to assess the provenance of glacial and post-glacial sediments from the Parana Basin, Brazil and the Chaco-Parana Basin, Uruguay. Results show different detrital zircon signatures between the two basins, suggesting distinct sources for glaciers that deposited sediments in these basins. The study contributes to a better understanding of glacial processes in the region.

Late Paleozoic tectono-sedimentary evolution of eastern Chaco-Parana Basin (Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay)

Gerardo Veroslavsky et al.

Summary: The study conducted geological research on the Chaco-Parana Basin in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, proposing a regional tectonic-sedimentary evolution model for the Late Paleozoic megasequences. It divided the basin fill into three megasequences, revealing marine sedimentation characteristics and potential hydrocarbon resources in the area.

The late Paleozoic Ice Age along the southwestern margin of Gondwana: Facies models, age constraints, correlation and sequence stratigraphic framework

Oscar Lopez-Gamundi et al.

Summary: The southwestern margin of South America presents a comprehensive record of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) that affected the Gondwana supercontinent, refined into five discrete glacial events primarily occurring in marine environments. The paleofjord model has been confirmed in the Protoprecordillera with stages of valley incision, subglacial diamictite deposition, early and late transgressive events, and highstand with deltaic progradation. This glacial chronology reflects common tripartite motifs and is characterized by deglaciation sequences transitioning into postglacial conditions, demonstrating the complex interplay between glacial and marine processes in the region.

Fjord network in Namibia: A snapshot into the dynamics of the late Paleozoic glaciation

Pierre Dietrich et al.

Summary: Research has shown that U-shaped valleys in northwestern Namibia from the late Paleozoic ice age represent intact fjord-network morphologies, providing insight into ancient ice dynamics and climate regulation. The preserved glacial morphology in this region allows for reconstruction of past ice thicknesses and glacier dynamics. Fjords likely played a crucial role in both glacier dynamics and organic carbon sequestration during this icehouse period.

A LITHOFACIES ANALYSIS OF A SOUTH POLAR GLACIATION IN THE EARLY PERMIAN: PAGODA FORMATION, SHACKLETON GLACIER REGION, ANTARCTICA

Libby R. W. Ives et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the sedimentology, stratigraphy, and flow directions of the glaciogenic deposits from the Asselian-Sakmarian Pagoda Formation in the Shackleton Glacier region of the Transantarctic Basin to characterize Late Paleozoic Ice Age glaciation in a South Polar, basin-marginal setting. The analyses show that the deposits were likely from two different ice centers, one centered on the Antarctic Craton and another located over Marie Byrd Land, indicating the complexity of the glaciation during that period.

Ichnological aspects of the Aquidauana Formation (Upper Carboniferous, Itarare Group, Brazil): An arthropod-colonized glacial setting

Gabriel E. B. de Barros et al.

Summary: The Aquidauana Formation in Brazil's Late Paleozoic Ice Age presents a unique sedimentary record with a rich ichnofossil assemblage dominated by small arthropods, reflecting low functional morphology richness and environmental stress related to glacial environments. The presence of Warvichnium and Monomorphichnus distinguishes it from other Gondwanic glacial deposits, suggesting a relationship with freshwater influence and invertebrate colonization followed by subaerial exposure.

Variations in Hard-Bedded Topography Beneath Glaciers

Summary: The morphology of glacier beds plays a critical role in determining slip speeds and rates of subglacial erosion. By studying the spatial parameters of bed morphologies in proglacial areas, researchers have found evidence of both convergence towards a common bed morphology due to glacier flow over bedrock, as well as distinct properties at different locations preventing uniformity.
