Avoiding oxygen-induced early fracture in titanium with high strength via entangled grains through laser powder bed fusion

Kewei Chen et al.

Summary: Increasing oxygen content enhances the yield strength of L-PBF Ti without sacrificing ductility, possibly due to the entangled grains and formation of multiple slip systems that prevent intergranular crack propagation.

In-situ investigation of plasticity in a Ti-Al-V-Fe (α plus β) alloy: Slip mechanisms, strain localization, and partitioning

Shaolou Wei et al.

Summary: The study focused on an in-situ mechanistic investigation of a Ti-Al-V-Fe (alpha+beta) alloy, revealing a moderate partitioning trend between alpha- and beta-phases and prominent strain localization bands influenced by texture-facilitated prismatic a slip activation and near-ideal slip transfer conditions across the alpha/beta phase boundaries. Postmortem and in-situ damage analyses confirmed the significant role of these long-range strain localization bands in accelerating surface cracking events.

A new α plus β Ti-alloy with refined microstructures and enhanced mechanical properties in the as-cast state

Tianlong Zhang et al.

Summary: A new Ti-6Al-2V-1Cr-1Fe alloy with fine grain sizes, fine precipitates, high strength, and excellent ductility has been developed, showing significant improvements in properties compared to the commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The alloying elements and tuning of supercooling capacity play key roles in achieving grain refinement and improved mechanical properties. This low-cost Ti alloy is expected to be highly suitable for various structural applications.

Design of high strength and wear-resistance β-Ti alloy via oxygen-charging

Xiu-Qun Wang et al.

Summary: Titanium is a promising biomedical material due to its corrosion resistance, low elastic modulus, and biocompatibility. However, its inferior abrasion performance and strength-ductility trade-off limit its application as biomedical implants. Researchers have developed an oxygen-charging method to fabricate a beta-Ti alloy with ultrahigh surface hardness, strength, toughness, and wear resistance. The unique oxygen gradient distribution in the alloy contributes to its superior mechanical performance, resisting surface crack propagation and catastrophic failure.

Significantly enhanced tensile ductility and its origin of a ⟨0001⟩ micro-textured extrusion bar of a powder metallurgy near alpha titanium alloy

H. R. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tensile properties and deformation mechanism of a hot-extruded powder metallurgy near alpha-Ti alloy characterized by a regular lamellar microstructure. The alloy's ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and equivalent elongation to fracture (EI) were improved by utilizing a unique micro-texture. Furthermore, annealing resulted in the formation of a bi-lamellar microstructure, enhancing the mechanical performance of the alloy.

Ultrahigh yield strength and large uniform elongation achieved in ultrafine-grained titanium containing nitrogen

Yan Chong et al.

Summary: In this study, the influences of nitrogen content and grain size on the tensile properties and deformation behaviors of titanium at room temperature were systematically investigated. Ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ti-0.3 wt%N alloy with a fully recrystallized microstructure was obtained, exhibiting unprecedented ultrahigh yield strength and large uniform elongation. The hardening and strain-hardening mechanisms of Ti-0.3 wt%N alloy were comprehensively studied, revealing the dual contributions of nitrogen to the excellent strength/ductility balance in UFG Ti-0.3 wt%N.

Interface-Mediated Twinning-Induced Plasticity in a Fine Hexagonal Microstructure Generated by Additive Manufacturing

Pere Barriobero-Vila et al.

Summary: This study discovered the activation of deformation twinning in a fine-grained hcp microstructure by introducing ductile body-centered cubic (bcc) nano-layer interfaces. The fast solidification and cooling conditions of laser-based additive manufacturing, together with intensified intrinsic heat treatment, allowed for the creation of ductile nano-layered structures with the potential to improve the lifespan of hcp damage tolerant materials.

Slip-twinning interdependent activation across phase boundaries: An in-situ investigation of a Ti-Al-V-Fe (α plus β) alloy

Shaolou Wei et al.

Summary: Microstructural plastic strain distribution evolution is highly heterogeneous even in single-phase alloys. The transfer of slip/twinning across grain/phase boundaries plays a crucial role in governing this heterogeneity. Understanding of the fundamentals of transfer across grain boundaries has received significant attention, while knowledge about phase boundaries remains relatively limited.

Elimination of oxygen sensitivity in α-titanium by substitutional alloying with Al

Yan Chong et al.

Summary: Adding oxygen or aluminum individually can decrease the ductility of titanium alloys, especially at cryogenic temperatures. However, adding significant amounts of both Al and O can substantially improve both the strength and ductility of the alloy, with mechanisms involving their synergistic effects.

A unique three-stage dependence of yielding behavior and strain-hardening ability in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy on phase fraction

Yan Chong et al.

Summary: The study revealed a three-stage dependence of the tensile properties on the phase fraction in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy. Decreasing beta phase fraction led to enhanced beta phase stability and a transition from double-yielding to single-yielding behavior. Strain partitioning between the phases at intermediate phase fractions helped maintain reasonable strain-hardening ability.

Cryoforged nanotwinned titanium with ultrahigh strength and ductility

Shiteng Zhao et al.

Summary: Nanostructured metals are usually strong due to high internal boundary density, limiting dislocation mean free path, but also more brittle. Nanotwinned materials can overcome this trade-off. A new nanostructuring method enhances the strength and ductility of titanium.
