Achieving thermally stable nanoparticles in chemically complex alloys via controllable sluggish lattice diffusion

Bo Xiao et al.

Summary: Nanoparticle strengthening is crucial for developing high-performance structural materials, but poor thermal stability and rapid coarsening of nanoparticles often lead to material failures. In this study, we demonstrate a strategy to achieve ultra-stable nanoparticles at high temperatures through controllable sluggish lattice diffusion, which is enabled by the addition of Co element. We also reveal the importance of reduced interdiffusion coefficients and increased incompressibility of Al induced by Co concentration in controlling the sluggish lattice diffusion effect.

Enhanced cryogenic tensile properties with multi-stage strain hardening through partial recrystallization in a ferrous medium-entropy alloy

Jae Wung Bae et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the formation of partially recrystallized bimodal microstructures in the Fe60Co15Ni15Cr10 (at%) ferrous medium-entropy alloy through a single-step heat treatment after cold-rolling. This process enhances the yield-strength and ultimate-tensile-strength of the alloy while maintaining a persistent ductility of 61%, thus avoiding the strength-ductility trade-off. The retention of deformation substructures allows for a significant increase in yield-strength compared to a fully-recrystallized state.

Heterogenous columnar-grained high-entropy alloys produce exceptional resistance to intermediate-temperature intergranular embrittlement

B. X. Cao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a novel heterogenous columnar-grained (HCG) approach that can effectively overcome the severe intergranular embrittlement issue of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) at intermediate temperatures. The newly developed HCG-HEA exhibits exceptionally high resistance to intergranular fractures and shows a combination of high tensile ductility and yield strength at 800 degrees C. This finding provides a new insight into innovative design of high-temperature materials with extraordinary mechanical properties.

Strain partitioning enables excellent tensile ductility in precipitated heterogeneous high-entropy alloys with gigapascal yield strength

Feng He et al.

Summary: A Ni2CoCrFeTi0.24Al0.2 HEA was developed with a yield strength of approximately 1.3 GPa and tensile elongation of 20% through single-step heat treatment. The excellent strength-ductility combination is attributed to the grain scale heterogeneous structure with L1(2) precipitates ranging from 10 to 100 nm. Additionally, the efficient hetero-deformation induced strain hardening effect allows for the good ductility of the HEA.

A novel L12-strengthened multicomponent Co-rich high-entropy alloy with both high γ′-solvus temperature and superior high-temperature strength

B. X. Cao et al.

Summary: A multicomponent Co-rich high-entropy alloy strengthened with L1(2) was developed, showing superior microstructural stability and high-temperature tensile strength. The alloy combines high γ'-solvus temperature and low mass density, serving as a paradigm for designing advanced high-temperature alloys with broader temperature capabilities.
