Laser-equipped gas reaction chamber for probing environmentally sensitive materials at near atomic scale

Heena Khanchandani et al.

Summary: Numerous metallurgical and materials science applications rely on quantitative atomic-scale characterizations of environmentally-sensitive materials and their transient states. This paper discusses two examples demonstrating the realization of ex-situ thermochemical treatment using a reaction chamber called the Reacthub, and characterizing the treated materials using atom probe or scanning Xe+/electron microscopes.

A cracking oxygen story: A new view of stress corrosion cracking in titanium alloys

Sudha Joseph et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of oxygen and hydrogen at crack tips in an industrial titanium alloy. The results show that crack tips are enriched in oxygen, while the amount of hydrogen is relatively low. The authors suggest that the combined effect of oxygen and hydrogen leads to cracking, with oxygen playing a vital role in embrittlement.

Hydrogen-induced ductilization in a novel austenitic lightweight TWIP steel

Zen-Hao Lai et al.

Summary: This study identified a hydrogen-induced ductilization phenomenon in a specific austenitic lightweight TWIP steel, which is influenced by hydrogen and deformation twinning during deformation, preventing hydrogen embrittlement.

Revisiting stress-corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement in 7xxx-Al alloys at the near-atomic-scale

Marti Lopez Freixes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure changes and hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms of high-strength 7xxx series aluminium alloys under stress-corrosion cracking. The research reveals the segregation of hydrogen to planar arrays of dislocations and grain boundaries, leading to the material becoming brittle through hydrogen-enhanced localised plasticity and hydrogen-enhanced decohesion.

Hydrogen-enhanced densified twinning (HEDT) in a twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of hydrogen was found to decrease twin thickness and increase twin density in TWIP austenitic steel, influencing its hydrogen embrittlement behavior. This phenomenon, termed hydrogen-enhanced densified twinning, plays an important role in the twinning process of TWIP austenitic steel.

Corrosion Mechanisms of High-Mn Twinning-Induced Plasticity (TWIP) Steels: A Critical Review

David M. Bastidas et al.

Summary: TWIP steels have higher strength and ductility compared to conventional steels, making them a potential material of interest for automotive applications. However, more research is needed on their corrosion resistance and performance in service. Understanding corrosion behavior and mechanisms is crucial for determining the optimal protection and cost reduction in automotive applications.

Precipitation formation on Σ5 and Σ7 grain boundaries in 316L stainless steel and their roles on intergranular corrosion

Shao-Pu Tsai et al.

Summary: In sensitized AISI 316L stainless steel samples attacked by an HF solution, it was found that Sigma 7 grain boundaries always show corrosion while Sigma 5 grain boundaries never do. The distinct corrosion behavior is related to the different precipitation behavior and surface features exhibited by the two types of grain boundaries.

Neutron irradiation induced changes in isotopic abundance of 6Li and 3D nanoscale distribution of tritium in LiAlO2 pellets analyzed by atom probe tomography

Arun Devaraj et al.

Summary: This study successfully evaluated the Li isotopic enrichment in both the LiAlO2 matrix and the Li deficient secondary phase LiAl5O8 using atom probe tomography, demonstrating its unique capability for analyzing 6Li isotopic enrichment. Evidence for heterogeneous nanoscale distribution of Tritium and Oxygen isotopes within irradiated pellet microstructure was also provided.
