Correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties of columnar crystals in the directionally solidified Mg-Gd-Y-Er alloy

D. R. Fang et al.

Summary: The Mg-4.58Gd-0.45Y-0.01Er alloy with different crystal orientations was prepared, and the effects of crystal orientation on the mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that the hard orientation alloy has high strength but poor plasticity, while the soft orientation alloy has low strength but good work hardening ability. By alternating the arrangement of hard and soft orientation columnar crystals, the alloy exhibits improved strength and plasticity simultaneously.

Quasi-in-situ study on {10-12} twinning-detwinning behavior of rolled Mg-Li alloy in two-step compression (RD)-compression (ND) process

Biaobiao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the twinning-detwinning behavior in a strongly basal-textured Mg-Li alloy using quasi-in-situ EBSD. The loading path was found to affect the twinning behavior and detwinning variants selection. Non-Schmid twinning behavior was observed in the first step compression, while Schmid's law well predicted the detwinning variants selection. The study also found that the Schmid factors for twinning decreased with compression, whereas those for detwinning increased due to prior twinning behavior.

Thermodynamic prediction of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity in Mg-Zn-La/Ce system

Tianci Xie et al.

Summary: Basic thermal and mechanical properties are crucial for structural magnesium alloys. Solute atoms and second phases can enhance mechanical properties but degrade heat dissipation performance. Experimental findings suggest that RE-Mg 12 phases have a lesser negative impact on thermal diffusivities compared to Tau 1 phases.

The hot compressive deformation behavior of cast Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloys with and without LPSO phase in their initial microstructures

H. T. Jeong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of intragranular lamellae-shaped long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase on the hot compressive deformation behavior and deformation mechanisms of Mg-8.2Gd-3.8Y-1.1Zn-0.4Zr alloy. The results show that the presence of LPSO phase increases the activation energy for plastic flow (Qc) and affects the deformation behavior and high-temperature strength of the alloy.

Mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with different extrusion ratio and LPSO volume fraction

Wujun Yin et al.

Summary: The high elastic modulus and deformation kinks of the long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase in Mg-Zn-Y alloys significantly enhance the tensile yield strength, with a slight detriment or benefit to the ductility. Extrusion processing improves both strength and ductility through recrystallization of Mg grains. The activation of different plastic deformation mechanisms depends on the volume fraction and relative size of Mg and LPSO phases.

Thermodynamics and kinetics of hydriding and dehydriding reactions in Mg-based hydrogen storage materials

Qian Li et al.

Summary: Magnesium-based materials show promise as hydrogen storage candidates due to their high capacity, environmental friendliness, and high Clarke number characteristics. However, limited thermodynamic and kinetic properties have posed challenges for their engineering applications. Recent progress has focused on improving these properties through alloying, composite materials, and nanocrystallization, leading to enhanced hydrogen storage efficiency.
