Non-Fungicides-Based Promising Technologies for Managing Post-Production Penicillium Induced Spoilage in Horticultural Commodities: A Comprehensive Review

Ajinath Shridhar Dukare et al.

Summary: Post-harvest commodities wastage caused by pathogenic fungi decay leads to significant economic losses worldwide. Synthetic fungicides, currently used for fungal diseases control, have harmful impacts on the environment and consumer health. Consequently, alternative environmentally friendly approaches have been explored recently, including microbe mediated biological control, botanical pesticides, and innovative physical methods. These emerging technologies can be utilized to suppress pathogen growth at different stages of spoilage development in the multiple hurdle concept of disease management.

Physiological and transcriptomic analysis of postharvest Jiashi melon at different storage temperatures

Ming Ning et al.

Summary: Low temperature storage can prolong the postharvest life of fresh fruit and vegetables, but tropical fruit may suffer from cold stress during storage. This study found that storing Jiashi melons at lower temperatures delayed rotting and reduced weight loss compared to storage at higher temperatures. Storage at 3 degrees C showed better results in terms of rotting rate, weight loss rate, and chilling injury index compared to storage at 0.5 degrees C. The study also revealed the molecular responses of Jiashi melon to cold stress, providing a theoretical basis for the development of new storage and preservation technologies.

Cuticular wax removal on reactive oxygen species-related mechanisms and on the quality of Hami melon cultivars

Weida Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of the epicuticular wax layer in preserving the postharvest quality of Hami melon fruit. Removal of the wax layer leads to fruit softening, water loss, decay, reduced sensory and nutritional quality, and shortened shelf life. The study also highlights the impact of wax removal on antioxidant enzyme activity, non-enzymatic antioxidant content, reactive oxygen species accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and organelle membrane structure.

Temperature and Maturity Stages Affect Anthocyanin Development and Phenolic and Sugar Content of Purple-Pericarp Supersweet Sweetcorn during Storage

H. T. Hong et al.

Summary: Storage period and temperature have a significant impact on the accumulation of anthocyanins and sugar content in Purple-pericarp sweetcorn (PPS). A higher temperature of 23 degrees Celsius was found to promote the development of purple pigment and continued accumulation of anthocyanins, while sugar concentration decreased more significantly at this temperature. The findings suggest that optimal storage temperatures need to be identified to optimize both quality criteria of anthocyanin accumulation and sweetness retention in sweetcorn.

Influences of ice-temperature storage on cell wall metabolism and reactive oxygen metabolism in Xinjiang (Diaogan) apricot

Wanting Yang et al.

Summary: Compared to storage at low temperature and 10 degrees C, ice-temperature (IT) storage better maintains the firmness, ascorbic acid content, pectin content, and cellulose content of apricots. It also suppresses the activities of certain enzymes, inhibits weight loss, respiration rate, ethylene production, plasma membrane permeability, and malondialdehyde accumulation, and improves the activities of antioxidant enzymes, thereby inhibiting the accumulation of reactive oxygen species during storage. Overall, IT storage is an effective way to improve the storage quality and antioxidant capacity of Diaogan apricots.
