Integrative RNA-Seq analysis of Capsicum annuum L.-Phytophthora capsici L. pathosystem reveals molecular cross-talk and activation of host defence response

Tilahun Rabuma et al.

Summary: This study used RNA-seq technology to analyze the defense response of chili pepper against Phytophthora capsici infection. Several genes associated with defense response were identified through transcriptome analysis. The enrichment analysis of the transcripts revealed their involvement in multiple signaling pathways. The differential expression of genes in two contrasting landraces was validated, and several genes associated with defense response were observed. Furthermore, this study also identified several transcription factor families and protein families, with the highest hits in the RI and SI samples.

Transcriptome analysis reveals defense-related genes and pathways against Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)

Shenghua Gao et al.

Summary: The study conducted a transcriptomic analysis of a susceptible and a resistant pepper cultivar infected with Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Xcv), identifying a total of 38,269 expressed genes with 11,232 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Functional enrichment analysis revealed key pathways involved in plant-pathogen interaction, MAPK signaling, plant hormone signaling, and secondary metabolism. Furthermore, the study identified 1,599 defense-related genes potentially regulating pepper resistance to Xcv, highlighting the importance of genes such as pattern recognition receptors, mitogen-activated protein kinases, calcium signaling molecules, and transcription factors.

Tissue-Specific RNA-Seq Analysis and Identification of Receptor-Like Proteins Related to Plant Growth in Capsicum annuum

Won-Hee Kang et al.

Summary: Receptor-like proteins (RLPs) are cell surface receptors involved in plant growth, development, and disease resistance. In a study focused on pepper RLP genes, it was found that CaRLPs play an important role in regulating plant growth and development as well as in defense responses to biotic stresses. Loss-of-function analysis of selected CaRLPs showed growth retardation in silenced plants, indicating their crucial function in plant development and defense responses.

The dissection of R genes and locus Pc5.1 in Phytophthora capsici infection provides a novel view of disease resistance in peppers

Jin-Song Du et al.

Summary: This study found that previously proposed NBS-ARC genes contributing to Pc5.1 did not show significant response to P. capsici infection, and there were no significant differences in transcription levels between 305R and 372S. Other pathogen defense-related genes such as SN1 may account for Pc5.1. The study also proposed the important role of sugar and epigenetic regulation in defense against P. capsici.

Capsaicinoid biosynthesis in the pericarp of chili pepper fruits is associated with a placental septum-like transcriptome profile and tissue structure

Yoshiyuki Tanaka et al.

Summary: The biosynthesis of capsaicinoid in the pericarp of chili pepper fruits occurs with an ambiguous boundary in the placental septum and pericarp. Some extremely pungent varieties show similarities in morphology between the pericarp and placental septum. These findings contribute to a better understanding of capsaicinoid production in chili pepper fruits.
