Microbial community and carbon-nitrogen metabolism pathways in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands treating wastewater containing antibiotics

Miaowen Qu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effects of sulfamethoxazole on carbon-nitrogen transformation and microbial community in constructed wetlands. The results show that sulfamethoxazole can be co-metabolized with organic pollutants, resulting in a high removal rate. Additionally, sulfamethoxazole promotes the enrichment of co-metabolizing bacteria and functional genes involved in denitrification, leading to an increase in denitrification rate.

Plants inhibit the relative abundance of sulfonamide resistance genes and class 1 integron by influencing bacterial community in rhizosphere of constructed wetlands

Ying Man et al.

Summary: The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater poses a potential health crisis. This study explored the importance of wetland plants in removing ARGs and sulfonamides (SAs) from wastewater. The results showed that planted CWs, especially those with Cyperus alternifolius, had significantly lower abundance of target genes compared to unplanted CWs. The presence of plants also influenced gene abundance in different parts of the rhizosphere. Additionally, dissolved organic carbon and oxygen content were found to significantly influence SA concentration, microbial community, and gene abundance. These findings highlight the importance of wetland plants in controlling the risk of ARGs.

Occurrence and human health risk assessment of antibiotics and their metabolites in vegetables grown in field-scale agricultural systems

Dorde Tadic et al.

Summary: The study found antibiotic residues in four types of commercially grown vegetables, with fertilization, irrigation, and vegetable type being significant factors influencing antibiotic occurrence. Metabolites were detected in most samples, with potential health risks being low. However, antibiotics in vegetables may exacerbate antibiotic resistance, requiring further research to assess the risks.

Fitness reduction of antibiotic resistome by an extra carbon source during swine manure composting

Xu Huang et al.

Summary: This study utilized high-throughput quantitative PCR to investigate the impact of specific co-substrates and additives on the antibiotic resistome during swine manure composting. The results revealed that corncob particles significantly decreased the relative abundances of antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements, while brick granules reduced bioavailable Cu and Zn concentrations. However, the addition of brick granules did not lead to a reduction in ARGs and MGEs.

Zewen Tan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Sphingobacterium changzhouense TC931 is a bacterium capable of removing tetracycline through biosorption and biodegradation, with its efficiency being influenced by solution pH and carbon source. Strain TC931 is rich in antibiotic resistance genes and may acquire a genome island (GI) through horizontal gene transfer, providing insights into its application in bioremediation.

Biotransformation of doxycycline by Brevundimonas naejangsanensis and Sphingobacterium mizutaii strains

Ting He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biotransformation of doxycycline by two pure bacterial strains, DD1 and DD2, revealing that both strains rely on cometabolism to convert the antibiotic with DD2 showing higher biotransformation kinetics. The biotransformation products of doxycycline were found to involve demethylation, dehydration, decarbonylation, and deamination processes.

Response of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes to tetracyclines and copper in substrate-free hydroponic microcosms with Myriophyllum aquaticum

Xuan Guo et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs). This study found that the presence of tetracyclines and copper in hydroponic microcosms led to an increase in the levels of resistant genes due to co-selection pressure. Reducing exogenous inputs of antibiotics/heavy metals and suspended solids in effluent is suggested for mitigating resistant genes in phytoremediation technologies.

Performance of full scale constructed wetlands in removing antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes

N. A. Sabri et al.

Summary: The study found that two constructed wetlands (CWs) showed significant removal of antibiotics, with some antibiotics having higher concentrations after treatment. In winter, five antibiotics had the highest concentrations, while ermB was more abundant in winter compared to summer. Other ARGs did not show significant seasonal changes, and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) did not affect the removal of antibiotics and ARGs.
