Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the Environment: Occupational and Exposure Events, Effects on Human Health and Fertility

Summary: In the last decade, there has been renewed attention in the scientific community on the presence and potential risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to their continued presence in the environment and workplaces. PCBs primarily enter the human body through ingestion of contaminated foods, followed by inhalation and dermal contact. These pollutants are found in building materials and electrical equipment, with the highest contamination levels in e-waste recycling sites. Studies have reported environmental and occupational exposure to PCBs, with workers showing increased blood PCB concentrations. Epidemiological studies suggest that high concentrations of PCBs are associated with various health outcomes including neuropsychological deficits, dementia, immune system dysfunctions, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. PCBs bioaccumulation also affects fertility and reproductive systems. Further research is needed to understand the effects of low-level PCBs exposure in workplaces and specific indoor environments.

Embryonic exposure to fenbuconazole inhibits gametogenesis in adult zebrafish by targeting gonads not brain

Summary: Exposure to FBZ in zebrafish embryos led to reduced reproductive ability in adult fish, as evidenced by decreased mature gametes and lower fertilization and survival rates of F1 embryos when exposed fish were mated with untreated fish. While transcription of reproduction-related genes in the brain was not significantly changed, key genes in the gonads were downregulated, indicating dysfunction of Sertoli and Leydig cells. Additionally, altered gene expression and methylation levels in germ cells suggest that they are the primary targets of FBZ.

Summary: The study aimed to develop an optimized culture system for maintaining ovarian cell growth and functionality. By isolating granulosa cells and theca cells from female rats and adding follicle-stimulating hormone or luteinizing hormone to the basal culture media, secretion of estradiol and androstenedione hormones could be significantly enhanced. Additionally, growth differentiation factor 9, bone morphogenic protein 15, BMP7 and basic fibroblast growth factor were found to enhance granulosa cell proliferation and estradiol production.

Unintentional sources, such as pigment/paint, combustion-related sources, and polymer sealants, account for a significant portion of total PCBs in Chinese soils.
