Evaluating the impacts of contrasting sewage treatment methods on nutrient dynamics across the River Wensum catchment, UK

Richard J. Cooper et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impacts of wastewater treatment plants with different classifications of tertiary treatment on nutrient dynamics in the River Wensum catchment, UK. The majority of nutrients were found in bio-available forms, with phosphorus mainly of agricultural origin. Phosphorus-stripping facilities did not reduce total P concentrations downstream of WWTPs, indicating their insufficiency in overcoming population pressures and ensuring river reaches good hydrochemical status.

Use of Copper-Based Fungicides in Organic Agriculture in Twelve European Countries

Lucius Tamm et al.

Summary: The reduction and eventual phasing out of copper-based plant-protection products is a top priority in European policy and organic agriculture. A survey was conducted to provide an overview of the current use of these products in European organic agriculture and the need for alternatives. The survey combined expert knowledge and statistics on pesticide use to estimate the consumption of copper in organic agriculture in 12 European countries. The results showed that approximately 3258 t of copper is consumed per year, which is 52% of the permitted annual dosage. The main crops contributing to this consumption are olives, grapevine, and almonds. More than half of the allowed cases involve farmers using less than half of the permitted amount. Completely abandoning copper fungicides at present would result in significant yield losses. To reduce or avoid copper use, preventive strategies need to be fully implemented, breeding programs intensified, and affordable alternative products brought to the market.

Rapid changes to global river suspended sediment flux by humans

Evan N. Dethier et al.

Summary: Rivers play crucial roles in supporting ecosystems, human health, and infrastructure. However, limited sampling has hindered our understanding of significant changes in river systems. Satellite-based measurements have shown widespread global changes in suspended sediment concentration and flux, which are directly caused by human activities in the past 50 years. Dams in the global hydrologic north have reduced sediment flux to 49% of pre-dam conditions, while intensive land-use change in the global hydrologic south has increased river suspended sediment concentration by an average of 41 +/- 7% compared to the 1980s. This north-south divergence has rapidly altered global patterns in sediment flux, with South America becoming the dominant source of suspended sediment instead of Asia.

Is water quality in British rivers better than at any time since the end of the Industrial Revolution?

M. J. Whelan et al.

Summary: The study explored the claim that river water quality in Great Britain is better now than at any time since the Industrial Revolution. Data and evidence were reviewed for seven categories of water pollutants. The findings suggest that water quality in many rivers downstream of urban centers has improved in sanitary terms, but emerging contaminants and intensive agriculture remain significant challenges. Better identification and prioritization of multiple stressors are needed to enable continued recovery.

A survey of heavy metal contents of rural and urban roadside dusts: comparisons at low, medium and high traffic sites in Central Scotland

Nicholas Cowan et al.

Summary: The study found that traffic intensity is correlated with the concentrations of Cu, Cr, and Zn in roadside dust, with only Cu and Zn concentrations exceeding recommended guidelines for urban runoff materials, especially in areas of high traffic intensity. This could potentially impact the health of pedestrians and cyclists who are regularly exposed to roadside dust.

Groundwater quality trend and trend reversal assessment in the European Water Framework Directive context: an example with nitrates in Italy

Eleonora Frollini et al.

Summary: Groundwater resources are vital for sustaining water ecosystems and human activities. Early actions are needed to address the long-lasting impacts from anthropogenic activities. European Union policies, such as the Water Framework Directive, require Member States to identify and reverse significant upward trends in pollutant concentrations, with Italy recently publishing official guidelines for trend analysis. Various statistical methods, such as the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's method, are proposed for trend analysis and estimation of concentration scenarios.

Nitrate Transport and Retention in Western European Catchments Are Shaped by Hydroclimate and Subsurface Properties

Sophie Ehrhardt et al.

Summary: The study in 238 Western European catchments found that half of the regions took an average of 5 years to reach the peak riverine concentration after nitrogen application, with longer transport times observed in areas with high potential evapotranspiration and low precipitation seasonality. On average, the catchments retained 72% of nitrogen from diffuse sources.

A Tale of Two Rivers: Can the Restoration Lessons of River Thames (Southern UK) Be Transferred to River Hindon (Northern India)?

Vasker Sharma et al.

Summary: This study compared the water quality of the River Thames in the UK with the Severely polluted Hindon River in India, identifying factors contributing to Hindon River pollution and potential solutions. It was found that improving sewage and industrial effluent treatment, as well as developing appropriate river basin management and regulatory plans, are crucial for restoring the Hindon River.
