Acute low-dose phosphate disrupts glycerophospholipid metabolism and induces stress in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus)

Ting Qi et al.

Summary: This study found that low-dose phosphate had negative effects on the metabolism of juvenile turbot, leading to cell structure damage and signal recognition disorder. It also induced oxidative stress and immunotoxicity in fish, affecting the expression of certain genes. Additionally, all phosphate-treated groups showed lesions on gill tissue. These findings are important for controlling phosphate accumulation in fish farming and protecting species diversity and marine ecosystems.

Induction of lipid metabolism dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation response by tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate in larval/adult zebrafish

Jin Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TCPP) can cause lipid metabolism disorder, obesity, and excessive lipid accumulation in the liver. TCPP also induces the over expression of adipogenesis genes and suppresses the expression of fatty-acid beta-oxidation genes, leading to oxidative damage and inflammation response. High-throughput transcriptome sequencing revealed that TCPP exposure affects pathways and gene expression related to lipid metabolism, inflammation, and cancer. The increase in Ki-67 and 53BP1 protein expression in the liver tissues of adult zebrafish indicates a potential risk of hepatocellular carcinoma progression.

Evaluation of the influences of low dose polybrominated diphenyl ethers exposure on human early retinal development

Minghui Li et al.

Summary: This study utilizes human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal organoids (hESC-ROs) to assess the toxicity of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) on retinal development. The results show that low-level exposure to PBDEs leads to decreased retinal thickness and area, abnormal cell distributions, reduced cell proliferation, increased cell apoptosis, and abnormal differentiation. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis further reveal the impact of PBDEs on extracellular matrix organization and metabolism. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of the retinotoxicity of PBDEs during early human retinal development.

Summary: Several environmental pollutants have been shown to damage the brain and affect gut microbiota. This study found that chemical cocktails (CC) of pollutants can have an impact on the brain metabolome, but this can be mitigated by the antioxidant selenium (Se). Furthermore, the study identified associations between brain metabolites and gut microbes, which were influenced by Se supplementation.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis involves in host non-alcoholic fatty liver disease upon pyrethroid pesticide exposure

Meng Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that gut microbiota dysbiosis is involved in abnormal lipid metabolism and the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Xenopus laevis exposed to cis-bifenthrin. Gut microbiota analysis reveals that cis-bifenthrin exposure significantly perturbs the microbial community and identifies specific taxa as biomarkers. Metabolomics profiling shows a significant change in intestinal metabolites involved in lipid metabolic pathways upon exposure to cis-bifenthrin.

Systemic PFOS and PFOA exposure and disturbed lipid homeostasis in humans: what do we know and what not?

Styliani S. Fragki et al.

Summary: The association between PFOS/PFOA and increased blood lipids in humans has been observed, while rodent studies show opposite effects, likely due to different exposure levels. Mechanistic research suggests that PFOS/PFOA activate the PPAR alpha pathway in human liver cells, but the involvement of other nuclear receptors is less clear. Future studies focusing on human-relevant test systems are needed to better understand the implications of PFOS/PFOA exposure on lipid homeostasis and human health.
