A hybrid machine learning model for predicting crater width formed by explosions of natural gas pipelines

Guojin Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel hybrid model using artificial neural networks (ANN) was developed to predict the crater width formed by explosions of natural gas pipelines. The proposed model, trained by historical accident records, showed high prediction accuracy and stability, outperforming benchmark hybrid models and the model without an optimizer.

Real-time leak detection in oil pipelines using an Inverse Transient Analysis model

Ahmad Malekpour et al.

Summary: The proposed real-time leak detection method uses Inverse Transient Analysis (ITA) to capture leak location and associated leak rate in oil pipe conveyance systems. The method minimizes discrepancies between calculated and measured flow parameters, utilizing a genetic algorithm as the optimization engine and the method of characteristics for numerical calculations. Extensive numerical explorations confirm the method's promising results and ability to detect leaks even with small flow rates of around 2% of the line rate.

Statistics of catastrophic hazardous liquid pipeline accidents

Shengli Liu et al.

Summary: By using the block-maxima (BM) and peaks over threshold (POT) methods, the study described the tail behaviors of hazardous liquid pipeline accidents occurred in the United States, discovering scaling regularities in the tails of the estimated power-law distribution. Additionally, similar regularities were found in the severity of pipeline accidents across different measurement scales, consistent with the scale-free property. The GEV and GPD models were built to accurately estimate the probability of catastrophic pipeline accidents, providing insights for pipeline safety management and prevention of potential accidents.

Pipeline pipedreams: Oil spills, pipeline accidents, and the local truths embedding fossil fuels in the Yellowstone River Valley, United States

Madeline R. Emerson et al.

Summary: Climate change and human encroachment have impacted the flow and morphology of major rivers worldwide, while pipeline networks continue to transport hazardous materials, leading to incidents like oil spills in rivers. Policy evolution is hindered by the status quo, prompting the consideration of justice implications. A qualitative study on the Yellowstone River reveals the existence of a 'truth regime' upheld by citizen stakeholders but also challenged over time.
