Response of earthworms to microplastics in soil under biogas slurry irrigation: Toxicity comparison of conventional and biodegradable microplastics

Yuanyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in the responses of earthworms to exposure to biodegradable and conventional microplastics in soil with biogas slurry irrigation. The results showed that continuous exposure to microplastics induced adverse effects on earthworms, including mucous vacuolization, muscle disorder, lipofuscin-like deposits, tissue fibrosis, and cavity formation. The presence of microplastics also stimulated the oxidative stress system and decreased the antioxidative defense system in earthworms. Interestingly, the biodegradable plastic exhibited similar ecotoxicity effects as the conventional plastic, undermining its original intention of being less harmful to terrestrial organisms. Further exploration of the molecular and genetic mechanisms of earthworms in soil containing biodegradable plastics is needed to better understand the risks posed by such plastics in agroecosystems.

Thickness-dependent release of microplastics and phthalic acid esters from polythene and biodegradable residual films in agricultural soils and its related productivity effects

Aimee Grace Uzamurera et al.

Summary: This study conducted a two-year landfill test and found significant changes in physical forms and spectral peaks in the biodegradable film. Compared to the polyethylene film, the biodegradable film had higher release of microplastics and phthalic acid esters, and had negative effects on soil and crop productivity.

Macro- and microplastic accumulation in soil after 32 years of plastic film mulching

Shitong Li et al.

Summary: Plastic film mulch is an agricultural technology that significantly increases agricultural production but also leads to severe plastic pollution. This study found a considerable accumulation of macro- and micro-plastics in soil after 32 years of continuous plastic mulch film use in an agricultural field. The long-term use of plastic film mulch not only causes surface pollution but also contamination in deep soil layers, making removal and remediation challenging.

Kinetics of microplastic generation from different types of mulch films in agricultural soil

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Upon environmental weathering, plastic materials form smaller sized microplastics, with plastic mulch films being a major source of agricultural soil microplastic pollution. This study quantified the rate of microplastic generation from different types of mulch films under simulated UV irradiation. Results showed that biodegradable mulch film had the highest rate of microplastic formation, followed by oxodegradable, white PE, and black PE mulch films. The kinetics of microplastic generation followed Schwarzchild's law, and UV irradiation increased the crystallinity and surface erosion of the mulch films, affecting the quantity and size ranges of microplastic debris.

Belowground plant inputs exert higher metabolic activities and carbon use efficiency of soil nematodes than aboveground inputs

Zhiyong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of aboveground and belowground plant carbon inputs on soil nematode communities. The results showed that belowground inputs supported a higher abundance of nematodes and favored a bacterial-driven decomposition channel, while aboveground inputs favored a fungal decomposition channel. Compared to aboveground inputs, belowground inputs increased the metabolic activity of higher functional guilds of nematodes, the growth and respiration rates of bacterivores, omnivores predators, and total nematodes, and the carbon use efficiency of omnivores-predators and total nematodes.

Effects of increased plastic film residues on soil properties and crop productivity in agro-ecosystem

Kiprotich Koskei et al.

Summary: The intensive use of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic films in agro-ecosystems has raised concerns due to the increasing film residues in soils. A study on maize fields found that the increased film residues affected soil properties and crop productivity, with biodegradable (Bio) film residues showing slightly less negative impact compared to LDPE residues. This resulted in changes in soil nitrogen content, bulk density, porosity, microbial biomass, and maize yield.

How to take representative samples to quantify microplastic particles in soil?

Yingxue Yu et al.

Summary: The study finds a strong non-linear relationship between the representative elementary volume (REV) and the required number of samples to quantify plastic concentrations as the plastic concentration increases. It recommends taking replicated samples as large as possible and reducing the soil volume using the quartering method for accurate measurement of plastic concentrations.

Biodegradable plastic as an integral part of the solution to plastic waste pollution of the environment

Markus Flury et al.

Summary: Biodegradable plastics are seen as promising alternatives to traditional, persistent plastics, with benefits in packaging, single-use items, and agricultural plastic mulches. However, proper use and management are essential, as well as the need for additional testing to verify biodegradation rates in natural environments. Attention also needs to be paid to additives in biodegradable plastics to prevent environmental hazards.

Are micro- and nanoplastics from soil-biodegradable plastic mulches an environmental concern?

Yingxue Yu et al.

Summary: Micro-and nanoplastics are inevitably generated from biodegradable plastics during weathering and degradation, with the environmental risk depending on size, concentration, exposure time, and polymer characteristics. Proper disposal of soil-biodegradable plastic mulches can limit environmental harm, while inappropriate disposal may lead to environmental impacts.
