A review on anaerobic membrane bioreactors for enhanced valorization of urban organic wastes: Achievements, limitations, energy balance and future perspectives

Yisong Hu et al.

Summary: Sustainable urban development is at risk due to an imminent energy crisis and the generation of large amounts of organic waste, among other factors. Conventional waste management methods have limitations in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and resource recovery, making advanced techniques necessary to convert such waste into bioenergy, bio-fertilizers, and valuable-added products. The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) process has shown promise in valorizing urban organic waste, including food waste and waste sludge, by enhancing organic waste treatment and improving digestion efficiency through the retention and separation of functional microbes and suspended solids. However, challenges such as membrane fouling and mass transfer need to be addressed for wider application of AnMBR, particularly for high-solid organic waste digestion.

Characterization of trace metal impact on organic acid metabolism and functional microbial community in treating dairy processing wastewater with thermophilic anaerobic membrane bioreactor

Min Ye et al.

Summary: This study found that the anaerobic digestion process of dairy processing wastewater is influenced by trace metal content. Deficiency in trace metals can lead to deterioration of the process, reduced biogas production, disruption of the buffer system, and accumulation of organic acids. The lack of cobalt and nickel has a significant impact on the process, while iron concentrations fluctuate. In a deficiency of trace metals, syntrophic propionate oxidizing bacteria and methanogens are suppressed, resulting in anaerobic digestion failure. Therefore, supplying the appropriate trace metal dosage is crucial for achieving an efficient and stable anaerobic digestion process and a robust microbial community.
