Effects of different carbon sources on the removal of ciprofloxacin and pollutants by activated sludge: Mechanism and biodegradation

Yixiang Cai et al.

Summary: This research investigated the effects of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on SBR systems under different carbon source conditions. The study found that CIP had adverse effects on nutrient removal, but glucose could alleviate these negative effects and improve the removal rate of CIP. The changes in microbial communities were associated with the accumulation of nitrite and nitrate, and certain bacterial genera played important roles in the degradation process of CIP.

Evaluation of the synergistic effects of biochar and biogas residue on CO2 and CH4 emission, functional genes, and enzyme activity during straw composting

Xu Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of biochar, biogas residue, and their combined amendments on gas emissions, enzyme activity, and functional genes during rice straw composting. Results showed that biogas residue increased CO2 and CH4 emissions, while biochar had inhibitory effects. Biogas residue also enhanced the abundance of functional genes. Biochar improved activities related to carbon fixation and decreased activities related to methanogens. Combined amendments of biochar and biogas residue increased the gene abundance for CO2 assimilation and decreased methanogen activity. Organic matter was found to be a significant variable affecting gas emissions.

Characteristics of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur cycling genes, microbial community metabolism and key influencing factors during composting process supplemented with biochar and biogas residue

Nanyi Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the functional genes and microbial communities involved in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling during composting with biochar and biogas residue amendments. Correlations between microbial community structure, functional genes, and physicochemical properties were analyzed. The findings showed that biogas residue decreased the abundance of denitrification gene nirK, while biochar increased the abundance of Humicola. Temperature, pH, and EC were identified as the main factors affecting the microbial community. The study provides valuable insights into the metabolic characteristics of microbial communities during composting and the application of biochar and biogas residues.
