Mechanistic insights into the roles of ferric chloride on methane production in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Wei Zhan et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of ferric chloride (FC) can significantly increase methane production in waste-activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic digestion by promoting dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR). However, FC also inhibits methane production from acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis by competing for electrons and inhibiting the bioconversion to methane. Microbial community analysis showed that FC enriched Fe(III)-reducing genera and bacteria related to hydrolysis and acidification, while decreasing the abundance of methanogens.
