Soil bacterial community structure in the habitats with different levels of heavy metal pollution at an abandoned polymetallic mine

Yue Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of soil bacterial communities to heavy metal pollution in different habitats of an abandoned polymetallic mine. The results showed significant variations in the diversity and composition of bacterial communities among different soil habitats. Heterogeneous selection played a crucial role in shaping the bacterial community composition. The study also identified key factors driving the variations in bacterial community composition, such as the total contents of Cu and Zn in tailing and remediation areas, and bioavailable Mn and Cd, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, soil organic carbon, vegetation coverage, and plant diversity in undisturbed and natural recovery areas.

Heavy metal contamination affects the core microbiome and assembly processes in metal mine soils across Eastern China

Xi Zhong et al.

Summary: Mining activities cause serious environmental pollution and stress to soil ecosystems. This study analyzed soil samples from metal mines in eastern China and found that pH and land use type played key roles in shaping the microbial community in heavy metal-contaminated soil. A core microbiome for soil restoration was identified. The findings enhance our understanding of microbial responses to environmental changes and can improve soil heavy metal contamination remediation practices.

Contrasting prokaryotic and eukaryotic community assembly and species coexistence in acid mine drainage-polluted waters

Zhixiang She et al.

Summary: Acid mine drainage (AMD) represents an extreme environment to life and is a global environmental challenge. This study examined the microbial diversity and co-occurrence patterns in five lakes with varying degrees of AMD contamination. The results showed that AMD pollution reduced both eukaryotic and prokaryotic diversity in the lakes. Acidic lakes had higher abundance of chemoautotrophs, while less polluted lakes had increased abundance of photosynthetic microalgae and heterotrophic/mixotrophic prokaryotes. Furthermore, acidity-dominated environmental selection drove the assembly of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic communities, with eukaryotes being more affected. These findings provide insights into the ecological processes in response to AMD contamination.

Alkaline mine drainage drives stream sediment microbial community structure and function

Lingrong Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sediment microbiomes in streams impacted by coal mining to understand how microbial community composition and function respond to mining activities. The research found that mining leads to shifts in microbial community structure and identified potential microbial indicators sensitive to mining impacts.

Divergent prokaryotic microbial assembly, co-existence patterns and functions in surrounding river sediments of a Cu-polymetallic deposit in Tibet

Weikang Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the assembly and co-existence patterns of prokaryotic microbial communities in the river sediments surrounding a Cu-polymetallic deposit in Tibet. The findings revealed that copper content played a dominant role in driving the distribution and structure of microbial communities, with increased negative interactions in high contaminated areas. Additionally, high copper content also led to an increase in the abundance of certain functional bacteria, aiding bacteria in coping with the stressful environment.

Temporal evolution of surface and sub-surface geochemistry and microbial communities of Pb-rich mine tailings during phytostabilization: A one-year pilot-scale study

Hugues Thouin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of phytostabilization on a Pb-rich mine waste through a laboratory pilot-scale experiment. The results showed that the addition of biochar, manure, and iron-oxide-rich ochre promoted plant growth and decreased Pb concentration in the surface layer pore water. Observations suggested that Pb immobilization in the rhizosphere occurred through the mechanical entrapment of tailing particles by Agrostis capillaris plants. Additionally, phytostabilization led to changes in microbial communities.

Temporal evolution of surface and sub-surface geochemistry and microbial communities of Pb-rich mine tailings during phytostabilization: A one-year pilot-scale study

Hugues Thouin et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of phytostabilization on lead-rich mine waste, with a reduction in lead concentration in the surface layer and a transient increase in lead, zinc, and barium concentrations in the deeper saturated levels. Plant growth was promoted by amending the tailings surface, leading to the immobilization of lead in the rhizosphere of Agrostis capillaris. Microbial communities showed temporary modifications in the non-saturated and saturated levels, with pH and water saturation being key factors.

Environmental stress destabilizes microbial networks

Damian J. Hernandez et al.

Summary: Research shows that natural microbiomes under persistent stress exhibit characteristics of instability, with declines in microbial diversity and changes in network properties of stable communities. Pathogenic taxa decrease while oligotrophs and mutualists increase along stress gradients, impacting the negative:positive cohesion and potentially destabilizing microbiomes and their ecosystem services.

Selective leaching of copper and zinc from primary ores and secondary mineral residues using biogenic ammonia

Adam J. Williamson et al.

Summary: The study found that biogenic ammonia produced by Lysinibacillus sphaericus can effectively extract copper and zinc from primary and secondary materials, with high yields and selectivity. Optimal leaching of copper from automotive shredder residues (ASR) was achieved through a refined two-step indirect leaching system. These results provide important insights for future sustainable metal recovery technologies.

Key Factors Governing Microbial Community in Extremely Acidic Mine Drainage (pH <3)

Ye Huang et al.

Summary: The microbial community of acid mine drainage (AMD) shows significant physicochemical variations and microbial diversity across different mining areas, with Mg2+ and SO42- being the predominant factors shaping microbial structure. Functional redundancy and diverse metabolic potentials are identified in polymetallic AMD compared to copper AMD. Physicochemical parameters such as Mg2+, SO42-, Ca2+, temperature, and Fe2+ drive iron, sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon metabolisms in the microbial communities, distinguishing microbial profiles between copper mine AMD and polymetallic AMD.

Summary: The use of acidophilic bacteria to catalyze the reductive dissolution of oxidized minerals is a promising process for extracting valuable base metals, but the optimal conditions are still under investigation. Additionally, a new study has identified the roles of Acidithiobacillus spp. in this process and observed a phenomenon of latent iron reduction in pure cultures of these bacteria.
