Characterization and chemo-taxonomic evaluation of plant leaf waxes (long chain n-alkanoic acids, n-alkanes and n-alkanols) as a vegetation biomarker from species of the South American temperate forest (STF)

Carol Cerda-Pena et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize twelve dominant modern species of the South American Temperate Forest (STF) using three classes of leaf wax compounds and evaluate their potential as vegetation and chemotaxonomic biomarkers. The study found clear differences in leaf wax abundance and average chain length among and within the twelve species. Only the average chain length of n-alkanoic acids and n-alkanols allowed differentiation between evergreen and deciduous species. The distribution differences of leaf waxes among species can serve as a reliable tool to differentiate species under different environmental conditions.

Effects of redox conditions and temperature on the degradation of Sphagnumn-alkanes

Chaoyang Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of Sphagnum n-alkanes under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, revealing a preferential degradation of mid-chain n-alkanes under aerobic conditions. The results showed that redox conditions play a significant role in the degradation of Sphagnum n-alkanes, while air temperature has little impact. These findings will enhance the application of n-alkane paleoenvironmental proxies for reconstructing plant types and depositional conditions in peat sequences.

A long-term investigation of the variation in leaf wax n-alkanes responding to climate on Dongling Mountain, north China

Minrui Shi et al.

Summary: Long chain n-alkanes of leaf waxes are widely used in paleoclimatic reconstructions, and their relationship with climatic factors was studied through long-term measurements on Dongling Mountain in north China. Results showed that ACL is a better indicator reflecting annual precipitation, but significant interspecific differences in response to climatic parameters suggest ACL should be used in conjunction with other proxies for accurate paleoprecipitation reconstruction. Reconstruction of paleoprecipitation using ACL records preserved in sediments of Maar Lake Twintaung, Myanmar yielded consistent results with carbon isotope ratios and historical documents.
