Organophosphate pesticides an emerging environmental contaminant: Pollution, toxicity, bioremediation progress, and remaining challenges

Himanshu Mali et al.

Summary: Organophosphates pesticides are causing significant contamination and toxicity in the environment and organisms, leading to the need for safe and reliable methods for their removal. Bioremediation techniques using microbes or microbial-biocatalysts show promise in addressing this issue.

Assessment of risks, implications, and opportunities of waterborne neurotoxic pesticides

Delaram Dara et al.

Summary: Pesticides are chemicals that have contaminated water systems globally and have adverse effects on the human nervous system. Studies have shown a link between pesticide exposure and decreased functionality of neural stem cells. Additional factors such as bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and synergism with other environmental contaminants should be considered. The field of -omics provides a possible avenue for investigating the molecular mechanisms impacted by pesticides and discovering targeted therapeutics and bioremediation approaches for water systems.

Forests effects on the environmental fates of organic pollutants in a tropical watershed

Kayon S. C. Barrett et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the long-term environmental fate of PBDFs, dioxins, furans, and CUPs in tropical forests. The results demonstrate that tropical forests, especially evergreen ones, decrease atmospheric concentrations, atmospheric long-range transport potential, and overall persistence of the pollutants, with a more significant reduction for polar CUPs.

Exposure Routes and Health Risks Associated with Pesticide Application

Muyesaier Tudi et al.

Summary: Pesticides play a crucial role in agricultural development, but their adverse effects on human health and the environment remain a serious concern. The application methods, exposure routes, and health risks associated with pesticide use need to be discussed. Developing countries are particularly affected by the health problems caused by pesticide use and exposure. Policymakers should use scientific information to develop proper techniques for pesticide application, minimizing adverse health effects on both applicators and communities.

Efficacy of a large-scale integrated constructed wetland for pesticide removal in tail water from a sewage treatment plant

Chong Chen et al.

Summary: The detection of pesticides and other micro-pollutants in water is increasing, leading to the need for effective engineering methods to mitigate their impact. Traditional sewage treatment plants do not have specific processes for removing micro-pollutants from water. Laboratory-scale wetlands have been proven to be effective in removing pesticides from water, but large-scale wetlands, especially when used as a polishing step in sewage treatment plants, have been less studied. This study detected 44 target pesticides in the water of a large-scale integrated constructed wetland and found that the removal of these pesticides followed seasonal trends. The study highlights the potential of constructed wetlands as a polishing step in sewage treatment plants for the removal of micropollutants.

Assessment of pesticide residues in waters and soils of a vineyard region and its temporal evolution*

Diana P. Manjarres-Lopez et al.

Summary: Sustainable agriculture practices and integrated pest management are necessary to maintain a high yield in vineyard areas. This research evaluated pesticide residues in water and soil samples in La Rioja, Spain, and found that pesticide concentrations in water decreased significantly compared to 2011. The study highlights the importance of optimized and sustainable pesticide use to reduce environmental pollution in intensive agricultural areas.

SoilGrids 2.0: producing soil information for the globe with quantified spatial uncertainty

Laura Poggio et al.

Summary: SoilGrids generates global maps of soil properties using advanced technology and machine learning methods, incorporating soil observations and environmental factors to predict and analyze various soil properties worldwide. The research shows a good predictive performance for global soil properties, but also reveals the need for more soil observation data, especially in high-latitude regions.
