Road infrastructure expansion and socio-spatial fragmentation in the peri-urban zone in Accra, Ghana

Emmanuel Junior Adugbila et al.

Summary: The construction of road infrastructures is a driving force for socio-economic growth and development in countries. However, little attention is given to the socio-spatial impacts of road infrastructures, particularly in the Global South. This study explores how socio-spatial fragmentation triggered by road expansion affects different aspects of peri-urban life in Accra, Ghana, and finds that it leads to residential segregation, negative effects on social interactions, and the emergence of informal settlements.

Nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) pollution in the Accra metropolis: Spatiotemporal patterns and the role of meteorology

Jiayuan Wang et al.

Summary: The economic and urban development in sub-Saharan Africa has shifted the major air pollution sources in cities from biomass to road traffic. Findings show that NO and NO2 concentrations are highest in commercial/business/industrial and high-density residential areas, and are associated with indicators of road traffic emissions. Additionally, a clear seasonal variation in NO2 concentrations was observed, especially during the Harmattan season.

Global urban sprawl containment strategies and their implications for rapidly urbanising cities in Ghana

Owusu Amponsah et al.

Summary: Cities in Sub-Saharan Africa have struggled to address urban sprawl sustainably, and the projected population growth in these cities will worsen the situation. This review suggests that successful sprawl containment strategies implemented in developed countries can be adapted to tackle sprawl in Sub-Saharan African cities. Strategies promoting city densification and guiding physical growth are suitable for highly urbanized cities like those in Ghana, while preserving farmland and green spaces are recommended for rapidly urbanizing rural municipalities and districts. Similar land tenure practices and urbanization dynamics across Sub-Saharan African cities make these findings applicable to many other cities within the region. However, the success of sprawl containment strategies depends on addressing land tenure conflicts, strengthening planning institutions, and fostering collaboration among city authorities. Recommendations for addressing these challenges are provided in the discussion.

Identifying degrees of deprivation from space using deep learning and morphological spatial analysis of deprived urban areas

Angela Abascal et al.

Summary: This study applies deep learning techniques and morphological analysis to identify degrees of deprivation in deprived urban areas (DUAs) in low- and medium-income countries (LMICs). By generating a reference dataset of building footprints and using semantic segmentation of satellite imagery, the study successfully predicts building footprints and computes morphological features to identify deprivation variations. The outcomes contribute to understanding the physical dimensions of deprivation and planning targeted interventions.

Using satellite imagery to understand and promote sustainable development

Marshall Burke et al.

Summary: Accurate and comprehensive measurements of sustainable development outcomes are essential for research and policy making. The study reviews the use of satellite imagery and machine learning for understanding these outcomes, highlighting the scarcity of ground data and the improving resolution of satellite imagery. It also discusses the challenges of assessing model performance correctly in the context of noisy training data, and explores constraints to future progress and research directions in the field.

Spatial-temporal patterns of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and black carbon (BC) pollution in Accra

Abosede S. Alli et al.

Summary: Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing rapid urbanization, with air pollution emerging as a major concern in growing cities, especially in Accra, Ghana. The study found that commercial, business, and industrial areas have the highest levels of PM2.5 pollution, with concentrations 2-4 times higher than WHO guidelines. Additionally, PM2.5 levels peak during the dry dusty Harmattan period, and have decreased by 50% compared to measurements in 2006-2007. Effective policies are needed to reduce pollution levels and protect public health in urban areas.

Mapping the maximum extents of urban green spaces in 1039 cities using dense satellite images

Conghong Huang et al.

Summary: This study mapped urban green spaces in 1039 mid- and large-sized cities globally in 2015 using remote sensing data and Google Earth Engine platform, with a high overall classification accuracy. The findings revealed a spatial equity issue where cities in high-income countries had higher green space coverage and accessibility compared to cities in low-income countries. The study also provides baseline information to support international efforts in achieving urban sustainable development goals.

Predicting road quality using high resolution satellite imagery: A transfer learning approach

Ethan Brewer et al.

Summary: Global investments in road infrastructure are hindered by limited accurate information on existing roads. This study utilizes satellite imagery to estimate road quality and travel speed with promising accuracy. Training a convolutional neural network in the US and fine-tuning it in Nigeria results in successful prediction of road quality in Nigeria.

Space-time characterization of community noise and sound sources in Accra, Ghana

Sierra N. Clark et al.

Summary: The study on urban noise pollution in Accra, Ghana, revealed that commercial, business, and industrial areas near major roads had higher noise levels compared to peri urban areas. Road-transport sounds dominated the overall sound environment, but a variety of other sources, such as animals, human speech, and outdoor music, were also identified at different times and locations. Noise levels in Accra exceeded international and national health-based guidelines, indicating the need for environmental policy formulation and evaluation to improve urban residents' health.
