Response of substrate kinetics and biological mechanisms to various pH constrains for cultured Nitrobacter and Nitrospira in nitrifying bioreactor

Hongwei Sun et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the substrate kinetics, biological mechanism, and microbial community dynamics of an enrichment culture containing Nitrobacter and Nitrospira at different pH constraints. The results showed that the enrichment had the highest rate and substrate affinity for NO2- oxidation at pH 7.0. The abundance of Nitrobacter and Nitrospira genes was strongly correlated with the rate and substrate affinity. This study provides important insights into the kinetics and biological mechanism of NO2- oxidation in wastewater treatment plants.

The r/K selection theory and its application in biological wastewater treatment processes

Qidong Yin et al.

Summary: Understanding the characteristics of functional organisms is crucial for wastewater treatment. This review systematically characterized two types of strategists in wastewater treatment ecosystems and provided novel strategies for selectively enriching microbial community. The selection of r-/K-strategists depends on factors such as food-to-microorganism ratio, mass transfer, cell size, and biomass morphology. Practical applications include the concept of substrate flux for selective enrichment of r-/K-strategists.

Rearrangements of the nitrifiers population in an activated sludge system under decreasing solids retention times

Przemyslaw Kowal et al.

Summary: In this study, the coexistence and interactions of nitrifying bacteria were explored at decreasing solids retention times (SRTs). The results showed that the progressive SRT reduction was inefficient for the out-selection of canonical nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB), but the dominant NOB switched from Nitrospira to Ca. Nitrotoga. These findings are important for optimizing NOB suppression strategies in novel nitrogen removal processes.

New insights into modeling two-step nitrification in activated sludge systems - The effects of initial biomass concentrations, comammox an heterotrophic activities

Mohamad-Javad Mehrani et al.

Summary: This study extended the conventional two-step nitrification model by incorporating complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) and heterotrophic nitrification on soluble microbial products. A new calibration protocol was proposed and the impact of initial biomass concentrations and growth rates on model accuracy was investigated using response surface methodology. The extended model was accurately calibrated and validated, providing a better understanding of the effects of initial biomass composition on two-step nitrification modeling.

Conversion of full nitritation to partial nitritation/anammox in a continuous granular reactor for low-strength ammonium wastewater treatment at 20 °C

Feiyue Qian et al.

Summary: The study found that converting full nitritation to partial nitritation/anammox at ambient temperature is feasible for treating low-strength ammonium nitrogen wastewater. High-throughput pyrosequencing results revealed the co-enrichment of different aerobic and anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria, which may potentially deteriorate the PN/A process.

Optimization of the Aeration Strategies in a Deammonification Sequencing Batch Reactor for Efficient Nitrogen Removal and Mitigation of N2O Production

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: In deammonification systems, the study found that specific operational conditions and appropriate aeration strategies can effectively suppress nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and control nitrous oxide emissions. Through experiments and simulations, the research identified the optimal dissolved oxygen set point, aeration frequency, and phase duration ratio for achieving high ammonium utilization rate and low nitrous oxide emissions.

Comammox Nitrospira Species Dominate in an Efficient Partial Nitrification-Anammox Bioreactor for Treating Ammonium at Low Loadings

Yung-Hsien Shao et al.

Summary: This study revealed the important role of comammox Nitrospira in wastewater treatment, particularly under low ammonium loading conditions where their ammonia oxidation activity is significantly affected by free ammonia. This provides new insights into utilizing comammox Nitrospira for partial nitrification-anammox processes.

Incorporation of the complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) process for modeling nitrification in suspended growth wastewater treatment systems

Mohamad-Javad Mehrani et al.

Summary: The newly discovered process of comammox has brought changes to the traditional understanding of nitrification. Through long-term experiments, it was found that comammox may be responsible for converting over 20% of the influent ammonia load, and predictions based on the conventional approach were slightly better than other methods. Further investigation is needed to fully understand the role of comammox in nitrogen mass balance in activated sludge systems.

Summary: This study developed a novel strategy to achieve partial nitrification by selectively enriching ammonium oxidizing bacteria without the need for additional chemical agents. By controlling aeration time, the study successfully eliminated AOB and NOB, while maintaining high nitrite accumulation rates in effluent suitable for mainstream wastewater anammox.

Temperature Variations Shape Niche Occupation of Nitrotoga-like Bacteria in Activated Sludge

Yanchen Liu et al.

Summary: This study observed the influence of temperature on competition and adaptation behavior of Nitrotoga-like bacteria in activated sludge nitrifying communities. The results showed temperature as a deciding factor affecting niche occupation of Nitrotoga-like bacteria, with Nitrospira species being adaptive over a wide temperature range. The estimated temperature coefficient for the Nitrotoga-containing activated sludge was 1.042 between 4 and 22 degrees C.
