New insights into the photo-degraded polystyrene microplastic: Effect on the release of volatile organic compounds

Xinyan Wu et al.

Summary: The excessive use of plastics has resulted in the widespread presence of plastic waste in our environment, which leads to the release of toxic chemicals, particularly volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study investigated the release behavior of VOCs from polystyrene microplastics (MPs) after exposure to simulated ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The results showed that UV irradiation enhanced the release of VOCs, with certain compounds increasing in concentration over time while others decreased. The study provides new insights into the photo-aging process of MPs.

The polymers and their additives in particulate plastics: What makes them hazardous to the fauna?

Srinidhi Sridharan et al.

Summary: Due to increasing concerns on global ecosystems and human health, the environmental risks posed by microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have become an important topic of research. However, studies on these micro(nano)-plastics (NPs) have often treated them as a single entity instead of recognizing the diverse compositions and behaviors of different plastic polymers. Furthermore, there is limited understanding of the leachability and ecotoxicity of additives associated with these polymers.

Modifications of ultraviolet irradiation and chlorination on microplastics: Effect of sterilization pattern

Yuan Liu et al.

Summary: Chlorination and ultraviolet disinfection can have destructive effects on microplastics in drinking water treatment plants. Different sterilization patterns can lead to various chlorinated and oxidized modifications on microplastics, affecting their sinking and adsorption performance. Multiple sterilization patterns can enhance sinking and inhibit adsorption, reducing the potential risk of microplastics as vectors of organic contaminants in drinking water.

Multifunctional Ag/AgCl/ZnTiO3 structures as highly efficient photocatalysts for the removal of nitrophenols, CO2 photoreduction, biomedical waste treatment, and bacteria inactivation

Mohsen Padervand et al.

Summary: Over the past few decades, biological hazards and organic pollution have become major environmental concerns. Photocatalysis has been found to be effective in minimizing their negative impacts. In this study, lozenge shape Ag/AgCl/ZnTiO3 photocatalysts were synthesized and demonstrated excellent catalytic performance in the degradation of nitrophenols and the conversion of CO2 to CO/CH(4). The presence of Ag/AgCl component in the ternary construction contributed to the enhanced catalytic effects. Additionally, this study successfully applied the prepared photocatalysts to treat hazardous biological waste containing cancer cells and showed promising results in inhibiting tumor growth.

Environmental behaviors and degradation methods of microplastics in different environmental media

Binbin Xi et al.

Summary: Microplastics, a group of emerging contaminants, are widely present in the environment and have the potential to harm ecological environment and human health. Understanding the behavior and degradation methods of microplastics is of great significance in exploring the treatment of microplastic pollution. This article summarizes recent advances in the distribution and ecological impact of microplastics in soil and water environments, migration behavior and influencing factors of microplastics, and research progress on degradation methods, and proposes existing problems and future development directions. It provides a systematic reference for the future development and research of microplastics.

Modifications of microplastics in urban environmental management systems: A review

Ruijuan Liu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the modifications and degradation processes of microplastics in urban environmental management systems, discussing their effects on environmental behavior. The study reveals a high abundance of microplastics in sewage sludge and aging solid waste, while digestion and composting contribute to their decomposition. Several novel technologies for microplastics removal are listed, though an appropriate method for actual application is lacking.

Analysis of volatile organic compounds produced during incineration of non-degradable and biodegradable plastics

Min Jang et al.

Summary: As plastic consumption increases, the accumulation of plastic wastes has led to environmental problems. This study aimed to analyze the emission of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from non-degradable and biodegradable plastics during combustion. The results showed that non-degradable plastics emitted higher levels of VOCs compared to biodegradable plastics.

Dimethyl phthalate induces blood immunotoxicity through oxidative damage and caspase-dependent apoptosis

Zhenxing Chi et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the immunotoxic effect and mechanism of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) on blood immune system. The results showed that DMP caused oxidative damage in rats, suppressed immune defense, and disrupted inflammatory regulation, leading to significantly decreased blood cell counts and disordered antibody and cytokine secretion. Flow cytometry revealed a positive correlation between DMP exposure level and apoptosis/necrosis in lymphocytes, especially CD3(+)CD4(+)T cells. Transcriptomics uncovered an oxidative stress-related mechanism.

Health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds at daycare facilities

Mohamed Bayati et al.

Summary: Children are particularly vulnerable to various classes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments. This study identified and quantified 40 different VOCs in different locations at the University of Missouri, with personal care and cleaning products being the main sources of high indoor VOC levels. Through a novel framework called ToxPi, certain VOCs were found to exhibit diverse toxicity profiles, with some ranking as the most toxic indoor VOCs. The findings provide critical information for policy makers and early education professionals to address the potential negative health impacts of indoor VOCs in childcare facilities.
