Hotspots of riverine greenhouse gas (CH4, CO2, N2O) emissions from Qinghai Lake Basin on the northeast Tibetan Plateau

Penglin Lin et al.

Summary: This study reveals that rivers on the Tibetan Plateau may serve as significant sources of greenhouse gases, with their emissions influenced by water salinity and wind spread. Although the diffusive fluxes of greenhouse gases in rivers were relatively small compared to other studies on fluvial carbon gas efflux at the watershed scale, these emissions are likely to increase as climate warming continues.

Light and flow regimes regulate the metabolism of rivers

Emily S. Bernhardt et al.

Summary: Mean annual temperature and precipitation do not explain variation in gross primary productivity (GPP) or ecosystem respiration (ER) in rivers. There is significant variation in the magnitude and seasonality of GPP and ER across US rivers. Rivers respire more carbon than they fix and have less consistent seasonality compared to terrestrial ecosystems. Variation in annual solar energy inputs and flow stability drive GPP and ER in rivers.

Climate Changes and Their Elevational Patterns in the Mountains of the World

N. C. Pepin et al.

Summary: This comprehensive analysis examines the relationship between elevation and temperature/precipitation changes in mountain regions. The study finds that while some regions show increased warming at higher elevations, there is no universal amplification of warming in mountains on a global scale. Additionally, the increase in mountain precipitation is weaker compared to low elevations, indicating reduced elevation-dependency of precipitation.

Effects of Reversal of Water Flow in an Arctic Floodplain River on Fluvial Emissions of CO2 and CH4

K. Castro-Morales et al.

Summary: The release of organic matter from thawed permafrost will impact the sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in Arctic rivers. However, little is known about the temporal variation, environmental controls, and magnitude of greenhouse gases in these rivers. This study measured the concentrations of CO2, CH4, and O2 in the Ambolikha River in northeast Siberia, revealing the effects of temperature variation, flooding, and lateral exchange on greenhouse gas emissions.

Soil CO2 Controls Short-Term Variation but Climate Regulates Long-Term Mean of Riverine Inorganic Carbon

Bryn Stewart et al.

Summary: The study investigates DIC concentrations in over 100 minimally-impacted rivers in the contiguous United States. The results show that instantaneous concentrations are strongly influenced by changes in river discharge, while mean concentrations are regulated by climate. The study highlights the significance of subsurface flow paths in land-river connectivity and emphasizes the importance of characterizing subsurface CO2 distribution.

River runoff components change variably and respond differently to climate change in the Eurasian Arctic and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau permafrost regions

Chunlin Song et al.

Summary: Cryohydrological processes in the Eurasian Arctic and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau permafrost regions are changing rapidly, with different river runoff components responding differently to climate change factors. Low flows are more sensitive to warming, while high flows are more affected by precipitation. Future climatic changes may alter the shapes and distributions of flow duration curves, indicating important implications for cold region river management and mitigation under climate change.

Changes of Atmospheric CO2 in the Tibetan Plateau From 1994 to 2019

Shuo Liu et al.

Summary: The study on the long-term variability of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in China using records from Mount Waliguan (WLG) station revealed a continuous and steady increase in CO2 concentration over the period 1994-2019. Different observing periods showed similar increasing trends in the Tibetan Plateau and city regions, with Northern India emerging as a potential strong source area to WLG. The area of potential CO2 sources at WLG prominently expanded over time, indicating the need for further efforts to achieve carbon emission reduction in China.

Fluvial carbon dioxide emission from the Lena River basin during the spring flood

Sergey N. Vorobyev et al.

Summary: Research has found that pCO(2) in tributaries increases with decreasing mean annual temperature and increasing permafrost in permafrost-affected regions of central and eastern Siberia, positively correlated with carbon stock in soil, proportion of deciduous needleleaf forest, and riparian vegetation. Calculations showed that carbon emissions from lotic waters of the Lena watershed are comparable to those in other permafrost-affected rivers in Siberia.
