Putative biosynthesis mechanism of the neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine in marine diatoms based on a transcriptomics approach

Aifeng Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that marine diatoms Thalassiosira minima are capable of producing BMAA-containing proteins in axenic culture and in co-culture with Cyanobacterium aponinum. The biosynthesis of BMAA-containing proteins in diatoms is influenced by factors such as cell-cell interactions and nitrogen deprivation. Transcriptome analysis reveals the pathways and genes associated with diatom metabolism and cellular functions that are affected by BMAA biosynthesis.

Effect and function of β-N-methylamino-L-alanine in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Sea-Yong Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect and function of the neurotoxin BMAA in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum were investigated. The results showed that BMAA can control the growth of the diatom by triggering oxidative stress and influencing photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism.

Food web biomagnification of the neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine in a diatom-dominated marine ecosystem in China

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that BMAA was biomagnified in the food web from phytoplankton to higher trophic levels in Jiaozhou Bay, China, and BAMA was frequently detected in phytoplankton samples. Among 56 diatom strains isolated from the Chinese coast, 21 strains contained BMAA, while only DAB was detected in bacteria isolated from the gut of gastropod Neverita didyma.

Exogenous methyl jasmonate enhances lipid production in Isochrysis galbana under nitrogen deprivation and high light

Hongwu Cui et al.

Summary: Nitrogen deprivation under high light inhibits lipid accumulation in microalgae, but the addition of exogenous methyl jasmonate (MeJA) enhances antioxidant capacity and substrate biosynthesis, thus increasing lipid production in Isochrysis galbana.

β-N-Methylamino-L-Alanine (BMAA) Causes Severe Stress in Nostoc sp. PCC 7120 Cells under Diazotrophic Conditions: A Proteomic Study

Olga A. Koksharova et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that BMAA treatment results in imbalance of energy and metabolite levels in diazotrophic cyanobacterial cells, leading to upregulation of stress-activated proteins and affecting the expression of nitrogenase subunits involved in nitrogen fixation. These findings provide new insights into the ecological impact of BMAA on microalgal communities.

Fernando Gomez et al.

Summary: The confirmed presence of P. shikokuense in the Mediterranean Sea suggests a possible introduction from Asia via ballast waters. Molecular data also reveal that P. dentatum, P. obtusidens, and P. shikokuense are three distinct species with diagnostic morphological characteristics.
