Engineered biochar effects on soil physicochemical properties and biota communities: A critical review

Hui Tang et al.

Summary: Biochar is effective in soil amendment, environmental remediation, and carbon sequestration. However, the inherent characteristics of pristine biochars (PBCs) may limit their environmental applications. To improve the properties of PBCs and their effects on soil amendment and pollution remediation, appropriate modification methods are needed. Engineered biochars (EBCs) have various effects on soil physicochemical properties and biota communities when applied to soil. More research is needed to understand the impacts of EBCs on soil properties and biota communities. A systematic review is highly necessary to gain a better understanding of the effects of EBCs.

Phytoremediation potential evaluation of multiple Salix clones for heavy metals (Cd, Zn and Pb) in flooded soils

Yini Cao et al.

Summary: Climate-induced flooding can make soil prone to heavy metal contamination, affecting soil remediation efforts. This study found that Salix clones have the potential to cope with flooding and environmental contamination, with certain clones showing significant remediation capacities for multiple heavy metals. An AHP-EW model was utilized to comprehensively evaluate the phytoremediation potentials of different Salix clones in heavily multimetal contaminated wetlands.

A quantitative evaluation of the biochar's influence on plant disease suppress: a global meta-analysis

Yuheng Yang et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that soil applications of biochar can effectively suppress plant diseases and promote growth. The results of our meta-analysis demonstrate that biochar amendment significantly reduces disease severity while increasing plant biomass. Straw-derived biochar performs best in disease suppression, especially when pyrolyzed at medium temperatures. The application of 3-5% biochar in soil significantly decreases plant disease severity, and there is a dose-dependent relationship between biochar application and disease suppression/growth promotion. Biochar is more effective in suppressing airborne pathogens than soilborne pathogens, possibly due to its systemic activation of plant defenses. This research contributes to the standardization of biochar production and provides valuable insights for improving its effectiveness in disease control.

Biochar-induced changes in the soil diazotroph community abundance and structure in a peanut field trial

Kun Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of biochar on diazotroph community and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) activity. The results showed that biochar significantly increased the abundance and activity of diazotrophs in the topsoil, while chemical fertilizer decreased BNF activity in the subsoil. Soil carbon and nitrogen sources were found to be key factors influencing the distribution of diazotrophs and BNF activity.

Bamboo biochar greater enhanced Cd/Zn accumulation in Salix psammophila under non-flooded soil compared with flooded

Xiaogang Li et al.

Summary: Biochar can effectively decrease the bioavailability of metals in soil and enhance the uptake and transport of Cd and Zn by Salix plants, leading to increased metal accumulation in the whole plant. However, these effects may vary under different soil moisture conditions, with flooding offsetting the benefits of biochar-assisted phytoremediation.
