Performance of sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification process for nitrate removal from permeate of an MBR treating textile wastewater and concentrate of a real scale reverse osmosis process

Tulay Yilmaz et al.

Summary: Textile industry generates a large amount of wastewater with various polluting substances. Water reuse, especially with the combination of reverse osmosis and membrane bioreactor treatment, has become more common in this industry. In this study, the performance of an autotrophic sulfur-based denitrifying column was evaluated for the reduction of nitrate in the permeate of a lab-scale membrane bioreactor receiving real textile wastewater, as well as in the concentrate stream of a real-scale reverse osmosis plant used for water recovery from textile wastewater. The results showed that the sulfur-based column could achieve high denitrification performances for both the membrane bioreactor effluent and the reverse osmosis concentrate.

Effects of sulfamethoxazole on nitrogen transformation and antibiotic resistance genes in short-cut nitrification and denitrification process treating mariculture wastewater

Ting Li et al.

Summary: The influence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on short-cut nitrification and denitrification (SCND) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was evaluated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). SMX dosage significantly affected the removal efficiency of NH4+-N and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). The presence of SMX altered the microbial composition, leading to changes in dominant microorganisms and an increase in antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB). 2.0 mg/L SMX induced the emergence of alternative nitrogen removal pathways and influenced the expression of nitrification and carbon source metabolism related genes, as well as the diversity and relative percentage of ARGs.

Combined partial denitrification/anammox process for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment

Hussein E. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: Recently, the combined partial denitrification and anammox (PD/anammox) process using organic matter in municipal wastewater has gained attention for sustainable N removal. It offers advantages such as reduced dissolved oxygen demand, lower organic carbon requirement, less excess sludge production, and lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional nitrification-denitrification. This review discusses the latest improvements in PD/anammox systems and focuses on the production/consumption pathways of critical intermediate NO2-. The C/N ratio and concentration of dosed organic carbon are crucial for optimal efficiency, as overgrowth of denitrifying bacteria can negatively impact anammox activity. Microorganism competition in single-stage PD/anammox systems plays a key role in achieving efficient N removal from mainstream wastewater. Challenges and limitations in recognizing inhibition mechanisms and performance inhibitors are also addressed. Future research should explore combining PD/anammox with other processes and developing self-supporting bacterial systems to enhance total nitrogen removal efficiency.

A facile and efficient approach for the removal of high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen in wastewater: Liquid-phase plasma treatment

Sunjae Back et al.

Summary: We developed a liquid-phase plasma treatment (LPPT) approach for effectively removing high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen from wastewater. We investigated the optimal operating parameters and found that a higher pulse repetition, longer pulse duration, and alkaline conditions were favorable for ammonia nitrogen removal. The mechanism was proposed to involve the collision of accelerated electrons and the oxidation reaction of center dot OH. Our results confirmed the feasibility of LPPT approach for ammonia nitrogen removal.

Yan Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different reduced sulfur forms on the start-up speed of short-cut sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SSADN) reactors.
