An uncertainty-based framework for evaluating and improving the long-term resilience of lakes under anthropogenic droughts

Parastoo Pourmoghim et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new framework to evaluate the resilience of lakes under climatic and anthropogenic droughts, with a hierarchical structure of criteria for assessing lake's resilience. The proposed criteria include robustness, resourcefulness, redundancy, and rapidity, and a simulation model and Evidential Reasoning approach are used to quantify the sub-criteria and values. By applying the methodology to the case study of Lake Urmia and Zarrinehrud river basin, the most effective restoration scenario has been selected based on performance, cost, and uncertainty band.

Evaluating and improving the sustainability of ecosystem services in river basins under climate change

Saeed Ashrafi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new framework for evaluating the sustainability of basin-wide ecosystem services, using the Zarrinehrud river basin as a case study to assess the impact of climate change and water resources management scenarios on ecosystem services. The study finds that among all scenarios considered, WRM scenario 128 is the best option for improving ecosystem services in the study area.

Managing basin-wide ecosystem services using the bankruptcy theory

Saeed Ashra et al.

Summary: This paper develops a bankruptcy-based methodology to manage ecosystem services and applies it to the Zarrinehrud river basin in Iran to find that the basin is bankrupt. Six bankruptcy methods are developed and two Root Mean Square Error-based approaches are used to determine the most applicable management scenario.

Summary: This study investigates the groundwater level in the Yazd-Ardakan Plain basin in Iran and predicts it for future periods using different models. The results suggest that the groundwater level may decrease in the future, pointing to the need to prevent overexploitation of groundwater to avoid water shortages.

Increasing risk of meteorological drought in the Lake Urmia basin under climate change: Introducing the precipitation-temperature deciles index

Mohammad Sadegh Abbasian et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel framework to characterize meteorological drought conditions and predicts future climate trends in the Lake Urmia basin in Iran. Results indicate that the region is projected to become drier and hotter in the future, leading to an increase in dry/hot months and a decrease in precipitation, which is unfavorable for agricultural activities and the revival of the endangered lake.

Evaluating water resources management scenarios considering the hierarchical structure of decision-makers and ecosystem services-based criteria

Massoud Behboudian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new methodology for evaluating water resources management scenarios, considering various aspects of hydrological ecosystem services. The temporal variations in supplied water and agricultural drought management policies are assessed, along with ecological conditions as a criterion. A game theory-based hierarchical evidential reasoning technique is used for prioritizing and selecting the best water resources management scenario.

A regret-based behavioral model for shared water resources management: Application of the correlated equilibrium concept

Ali Eyni et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel approach for managing shared water resources quantity and quality by using the concept of Correlated Equilibrium and simulating agents' behaviors with Regret Matching algorithm. The methodology's applicability and efficiency are evaluated based on criteria such as nitrate pollutant concentration, groundwater table fluctuations, illegal water extraction rate, and stakeholders' general satisfaction. The results demonstrate a decrease in nitrate concentration, an increase in groundwater table levels, and a better understanding of environmental protection and conservation among stakeholders.

Evaluating the resilience of water resources management scenarios using the evidential reasoning approach: The Zarrinehrud river basin experience

Massoud Behboudian et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new methodology for quantifying the total resilience of water resources management scenarios, examining the impact of climate change on water supply and demand. Various criteria are defined to measure different aspects of water resources system resilience, and an evidential reasoning-based approach is used to compare management scenarios, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed methodology in the case study of the Zarrinehrud river basin in Iran.

Evaluating the long-term resilience of water resources systems: Application of a generalized grade-based combination approach

Massoud Behboudian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new methodology to evaluate the resilience of water resource systems under extreme events, including three main steps: calculating performance criteria, proposing a new resilience-based criterion, and defining adaptive management scenarios. The methodology has been applied to the Zarrinehrud river basin, showing that traditional criteria may not accurately assess system resilience under extreme events, while new criteria can improve long-term resilience.
