Biofilm formation in xenobiotic-degrading microorganisms

Pankaj Bhatt et al.

Summary: The increased presence of xenobiotics has a global impact on living organisms and the environment. Microbial degradation through the formation of biofilms is an effective method to remove xenobiotics from the ecosystem. Biofilms are formed by microbial populations attaching to surfaces and interfaces via extracellular polymeric substances. Quorum sensing plays a role in biofilm formation. However, there is limited information on the biofilm-mediated degradation of toxic chemicals from the environment.

Siphoviridae bacteriophage treatment to reduce abundance and antibiotic resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in wastewater

E. Grami et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel phage application process that can reduce the reservoir of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in wastewater, potentially lowering the risk of community-acquired infections in humans. The phage PA25, a double-stranded DNA phage isolated from wastewater, has shown a significant reduction in bacteria when added to primary wastewater compared to secondary wastewater. Additionally, the addition of PA25 to wastewater can eliminate streptomycin resistance and reduce resistance to other antibiotics in P. aeruginosa.

APTC-EC-2A: A Lytic Phage Targeting Multidrug Resistant E. coli Planktonic Cells and Biofilms

Karen Hon et al.

Summary: This study aimed to isolate and characterize phage as an alternative treatment option for multi-drug resistant E. coli infections. The newly isolated APTC-EC-2A phage showed promising properties, including stability at a broad pH range, ability to kill E. coli at different temperatures, and effectiveness against both planktonic and biofilm forms of the bacteria. Electron microscopy and genomic sequencing revealed that the phage belongs to the Myoviridae family and has lytic nature.

Minimizing Foaming and Bulking in Activated Sludge with Bacteriophage Treatment: A Review of Mathematical Modeling

Alejandra Vesga-Baron et al.

Summary: The interest in using bacteriophages to control foaming and bulking in wastewater treatment has grown in various industries. While successful results have been achieved at the laboratory scale, there are still challenges to overcome before widespread implementation can be realized. Mathematical models will play a crucial role in developing this technology and this review discusses their potential and challenges, particularly focusing on parameter identifiability and states' observability.

Summary: Due to their selective nature, bacteriophages have potential applications in targeted wastewater disinfection, removal of biogenic malodour, and mitigation of corrosion. However, scaling up remains a challenge. The study introduces the Lytics Broadcasting System device and Bacteriophage Amplification Reactor for effective dispersal of phages in wastewater, achieving significant reduction in bacterial count and H2S production.

Development and validation of a miniaturized bacteriophage host range screening assay against antibiotic resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Renee Nicole Ng et al.

Summary: This study established and validated a scaled-down methodology for high-throughput screening of bacteriophages isolated and purified from wastewater samples. The miniaturized host range assay against clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates using a spot test was found to be both sensitive and specific, with a high positive predictive value and negative predictive value. The study confirmed the breadth of host range of bacteriophages with lytic activity on P. aeruginosa isolates using the scaled down assay, demonstrating the potential for future automation in testing phage diversity and efficacy as antimicrobials.

The first sequenced Sphaerotilus natans bacteriophage-characterization and potential to control its filamentous bacterium host

Rute Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study describes the isolation and characterization of a new lytic bacteriophage, vB SnaP-R1 (SnaR1), targeting Sphaerotilus natans DSM 6575. The genome of SnaR1 is unique, with 99% of its sequences showing no homology to any other sequenced phage, and it is the first Podoviridae phage infecting this particular bacterium. Results suggest SnaR1 as a prototype of a new phage genus with potential as a non-chemical alternative for reducing S. natans DSM 6575 cells.
