Heatwave fatalities in Australia, 2001-2018: An analysis of coronial records

Lucinda Coates et al.

Summary: Heatwaves are the most destructive natural hazard in Australia in terms of loss of life. A study analyzing heat-related fatalities from 2001 to 2018 found that a majority of deaths occurred indoors, particularly in older buildings. While there was no consistent trend in the number of fatalities, certain years saw higher numbers of deaths, with a predominance of male fatalities. Risk factors for heatwave deaths included age, socio-economic status, social isolation, geographical location, disabilities, medication use, and lack of air conditioning.

Urban Warming of the Two Most Populated Cities in the Canadian Province of Alberta, and Its Influencing Factors

Ifeanyi R. Ejiagha et al.

Summary: This study quantified the surface urban heat island (SUHI) in the cities of Calgary and Edmonton, Canada, and analyzed its trends and influencing factors. The results showed that both cities experienced continuous increases in the annual daytime and nighttime SUHI values. Population and built-up expansion were identified as the main factors influencing the SUHI.

Social vulnerability and disasters: development and evaluation of a CONVERGE training module for researchers and practitioners

Rachel Marie Adams et al.

Summary: Social vulnerability refers to the sociodemographic characteristics of a population and various factors that increase their susceptibility to adverse disaster outcomes and capacity to cope with and recover from disasters. To meet the needs of vulnerable populations, the CONVERGE initiative developed a training module that draws on research and evidence-based programs. A pre- and post-training questionnaire showed a significant increase in self-rated knowledge, skills, and attitudes among participants, particularly students and those new to the field.

Urban Air Pollution, Urban Heat Island and Human Health: A Review of the Literature

Awais Piracha et al.

Summary: Many cities in the world suffer from air pollution due to poor planning and heavy traffic, which is further worsened by the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Previous studies have ignored the impact of UHI on air pollution and health. The literature on urban planning and technology fields focuses on promoting physical activity, reducing vehicle emissions, and utilizing green infrastructure and materials to reduce air pollution and UHI. This paper provides a systematic review of academic papers and policy documents in order to identify the main themes and impacts of urban air pollution and UHI on human health.

Deterministic Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations for Stable Explainability

Muhammad Rehman Zafar et al.

Summary: LIME is a popular technique for improving the interpretability of black box ML algorithms, but its random perturbation methods can lead to unstable explanations. To address this issue, we propose DLIME, which uses AHC and KNN to determine the relevant cluster for the explanation target and trains a model on this cluster to generate explanations.
