Biogeographical patterns and drivers of bacterial community in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: This paper explored the soil bacterial communities in two alpine grassland ecosystems on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in China. The study found significant differences in bacterial diversity, which could be attributed to changes in plant cover and total phosphorus content. The dominant bacterial phyla were Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Acidobacteriota. The study provides new insights into soil microbial geography and ecosystem functions driven by soil bacteria.

Contrasting successional responses of soil bacteria and fungi to post-logging burn severity

Hans Ammitzboll et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of logging and burning on soil bacterial and fungal communities. The results showed that bacterial communities recovered to pre-disturbance levels in terms of abundance and diversity after high severity burns, while fungal communities did not. Additionally, the composition of bacterial communities became more similar to undisturbed reference communities over time, while fungal communities did not. The study also identified specific taxa that responded positively or negatively to fire disturbance.

Megafire-induced interval squeeze threatens vegetation at landscape scales

Tom D. Le Breton et al.

Summary: Wildfires in 2019-2020 set global records in terms of scale and severity, ushering in the era of megafires. These frequent megafires have negative impacts on species and ecosystems. A comprehensive analysis of megafire impacts on southeastern Australian vegetation communities indicates that one-third of the native vegetation in this region has burned too frequently, particularly affecting fire-sensitive vegetation like rainforests. The study also demonstrates that megafires can infiltrate refugia and push fire intervals beyond plant species' thresholds, increasing the risk of ecosystem collapse. Innovative fire management approaches are needed to address this issue, but without addressing climate change, ecosystems adapted to infrequent, high-severity fires may face unavoidable collapse.

Mengyang Zhang et al.

Summary: Biochar has long-term and positive effects on the acidic soil microenvironment and citrus growth, improving potassium availability in soil and alleviating citrus potassium deficiency. It stimulates soil metabolism by increasing the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and affecting the metabolic activity of bacterial communities.

Fire and land use impact soil properties in a Mediterranean dry sclerophyll woodland

Mercedes M. Ondik et al.

Summary: Fires have a direct impact on soil properties and can lead to soil degradation. Climate change-induced droughts and elevated temperatures are increasing the severity, extent, and frequency of fires, posing a threat to soil function and ecosystem services. This study assessed the effects of the 2019-2020 fire season in Kangaroo Island, Australia, on dry sclerophyll woodland and the interaction between the fire and historical land use on post-fire soil function.

Long-term effects of forest fires on fungal community and soil properties along a hemiboreal Scots pine forest fire chronosequence

Argo Orumaa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term effects of forest fires on the dynamics of soil fungal community in hemiboreal Scots pine stands. The results showed significant effects of fires on soil and fungi, with soil saprotrophs and ectomycorrhizal fungi dominating the fungal communities. Fire had a significant impact on fungal species richness and composition, and soil pH also played a role in determining fungal species composition.

A cool spot in a biodiversity hotspot: why do tall Eucalyptus forests in Southwest Australia exhibit low diversity?

Xue Meng Zhou et al.

Summary: The low diversity of tall Eucalyptus forests in southwest Australia can be explained by dominant mycorrhizal species exhibiting a carboxylate-releasing strategy. The tall eucalypts are strong competitors that do not require facilitation, but also do not access organic N.

Effects of moisture contents in incorporated residues and soil on net nitrogen mineralization in a laboratory study

Suzette Santiago et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine whether drying crop residues before incorporation slows down net nitrogen mineralization and reduces the risk of nitrate losses in Mediterranean climates. Incubation experiments with tomato and broccoli residues showed that the moisture content of the residues only had a short-term effect on nitrogen turnover, and both residues resulted in net nitrogen mineralization over the incubation period.

Driving force of soil microbial community structure in a burned area of Daxing'anling, China

Meng Meng et al.

Summary: Fires have a significant impact on forest ecosystems in Daxing'anling, affecting the soil microbial community structure. Different fire severities lead to changes in bacterial and fungal community structures. The recovery process and responsive relationships of soil bacterial and fungal communities vary under different fire severity levels.

Metabolic potential and community structure of bacteria in an organic tea plantation

Wen-Ching Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed differences in bacterial community distribution in different root compartments of organic tea plantations, with distinct abundance of bacterial families in root surface and root interior samples. Soil-associated rhizo-compartments exhibited higher metabolic potential and diversity, while organic fertilization had short-term effects on soil pH, EC, and organic matter content.

Changes in ecosystem properties after post-fire management strategies in wildfire-affected Mediterranean forests

Manuel E. Lucas-Borja et al.

Summary: Forests are highly vulnerable to global change drivers such as an increase in wildfire events. This study evaluated the effects of different post-fire management strategies on multiple forest ecosystem properties, showing that specific management treatments can efficiently support plant diversity and ecosystem functioning. The research revealed that ecosystem functions in Mediterranean forests decreased after wildfires but specific post-fire management strategies could help recover community-level properties and forest functions in the short term.

Summary: This study found that while the wildfires in south-eastern Australia in 2019/2020 were larger in extent, they were not proportionally more severe than previous fires. High-severity fire area increased in wet-forests and less-common rainforest areas, accounting for 44% of the burnt area in 2019/2020.

Biocrust cyanobacterial composition, diversity, and environmental drivers in two contrasting climatic regions in Brazil

Nathali Maria Machado de Lima et al.

Summary: The study investigated the composition, abundance, and environmental drivers of cyanobacterial biocrust in two important biomes in Brazil, Caatinga and Pampa, revealing distinct taxonomic compositions and assemblages at each biome. Soil temperature and pH were identified as the main factors explaining the differences in biotic structures. The findings are expected to enhance biocrust conservation efforts and promote the use of biocrust cyanobacteria as indicators of global change.

Response of fungal communities to fire in a subtropical peatland

Jianqing Tian et al.

Summary: Low-severity fire increased fungal diversity and saprotrophic fungi in the top soil layer, but this effect was not observed in deeper soils. High-severity fire had a lasting impact on fungal community, especially in deeper soil layers, and soil properties were the primary driver in shaping fungal community reassembly after the fire.

Soil degradation influences soil bacterial and fungal community diversity in overgrazed alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Lin Dong et al.

Summary: The degradation of alpine meadows in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau caused by overgrazing has led to variations in microbial diversity and functioning. Soil bacterial diversity and richness were significantly lower in highly degraded areas compared to lightly degraded areas, while soil fungal diversity showed no difference among different degradation levels but soil fungal richness decreased significantly from CK to D3. The phyla Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, and the genus Mortierella were significantly different under the four degradation gradients, indicating the impact of alpine meadow degradation on microbial communities.
