Production of copper-graphene nanocomposite as a voltammetric sensor for determination of anti-diabetic metformin using response surface methodology

Shima Hassasi et al.

Summary: This study presents the application of a sensitive electrochemical technique assisted with multivariate optimization methods for measuring anti-diabetic metformin using a copper-graphene nano composite modified carbon paste electrode. The optimized conditions resulted in high current density and the sensor exhibited good reproducibility, stability, and low cost, making it a superior sensor for long-term use.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water streams: Occurrence, detection, and removal by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes

Ivan Lozano et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants with adverse effects on organisms and human health. Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOPs) are effective in removing PPCPs. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal compounds are the main categories of PPCPs detected. Further research is needed to understand the removal of PPCPs under realistic conditions.

Highly sensitive electrochemical detection of carbendazim residues in water by synergistic enhancement of nitrogen-doped carbon nanohorns and polyethyleneimine modified carbon nanotubes

Xingguang Chen et al.

Summary: An electrochemical sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon nanohorns and polyethyleneimine-modified carbon nanotubes was developed for the detection of CBZ content in water. The sensor showed a wider linear range, low detection limit, and satisfactory recovery under optimal conditions, and possessed good anti-interference, reproducibility, and stability.

Metformin chlorination byproducts in drinking water exhibit marked toxicities of a potential health concern

Runshuai Zhang et al.

Summary: Metformin (MET) and its chlorination byproduct C are detected in worldwide drinking water, with both byproducts increasing with MET concentration, posing a potential threat to global water safety and sustainability. Chlorination byproducts Y and C exhibit toxic effects on live worms and human cells at millimolar doses, and are harmful to mice, with byproduct Y particularly destroying mouse small intestine integrity at 250 ng/L. Boiling and activated carbon adsorption are identified as effective solutions for removing these byproducts from drinking water globally.

Characterization of graphene/pine wood biochar hybrids: Potential to remove aqueous Cu2+

Hasara Samaraweera et al.

Summary: Biochar-based hybrid composites with added nano-sized phases are effective adsorbents for pollutant removal, especially when functionalized with nanomaterials. Different pine wood wastes blended with varying graphenes were pyrolyzed to create adsorbents with different Cu2+ adsorption capacities, with GPBC-1 showing the highest capacity. The results suggest that the surface properties of the biochar composites play a crucial role in enhancing Cu2+ removal.

Ultrasensitive and selective molecularly imprinted electrochemical oxaliplatin sensor based on a novel nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes/Ag@cu MOF as a signal enhancer and reporter nanohybrid

Mater H. Mahnashi et al.

Summary: A sensitive and selective molecular imprinted polymeric network (MIP) electrochemical sensor was developed for the determination of anti-cancer drug oxaliplatin (OXAL). The sensor showed outstanding sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, with optimized fabrication processes and orthogonal design techniques. This MIP-based sensor opens up new possibilities for the fabrication of similar sensors and biosensors.
