The Calluna life cycle concept revisited: implications for heathland management

Jenny Schellenberg et al.

Summary: Heather, Calluna vulgaris, is a key species of European dry heath and plays a central role in its conservation status. The established Calluna life cycle concept describes four phases, but little is known about the life cycle and ageing of plants subjected to severe disturbance. Severe disturbances promote vigorous vegetative regeneration of young heather plants, which should be considered in the management of dry lowland heathlands.

The dynamics of the carbon storage and fluxes in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) chronosequence

Veiko Uri et al.

Summary: The impact of stand age on the ecosystem's carbon budget and post-harvest recovery of carbon storages and fluxes was evaluated in a chronosequence of Scots pine stands. The study found effective carbon accumulation in young and middle-aged stands, which leveled out in older stands. Soil heterotrophic respiration remained stable along the chronosequence, while net ecosystem production followed the dynamics of tree biomass production. The total ecosystem carbon stocks peaked in older stands, but soil carbon stocks varied regardless of stand age. The post-harvest carbon compensation point was reached at 7 years, and carbon payback occurred at 11-12 years.

Plant biomass allocation and driving factors of grassland revegetation in a Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau chronosequence

Xiaoxia Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a chronosequence of alpine grasslands undergoing restoration in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau was used to test two competing hypotheses for biomass allocation. The results showed that biomass allocation varied significantly during the revegetation period from degraded grassland, and was linked with soil properties, thus supporting the optimal partitioning hypothesis.

Disentangling climate from soil nutrient effects on plant biomass production using a multispecies phytometer

Summary: Plant community biomass production is co-limited by climatic and soil drivers, with species showing asynchronous responses in climate-corrected biomass. The study suggests an increasing role of phosphorus limitation in the temperate regions of Europe.
