Light-induced ferromagnetism in moire superlattices

Xi Wang et al.

Summary: Many-body interactions between carriers play a crucial role in correlated physics. This study demonstrates the ability to highly tune spin-spin interactions between moire-trapped carriers using optical excitation, resulting in ferromagnetic order in WS2/WSe2 moire superlattices. The observed phenomenon adds a dynamic tuning knob to the rich many-body Hamiltonian of moire quantum matter.

All-optical switching of magnetization in atomically thin CrI3

Peiyao Zhang et al.

Summary: The authors successfully demonstrated all-optical magnetization switching in an atomically thin ferromagnetic semiconductor using circularly polarized light pulses. The switching process is related to the transfer of spin angular momentum from photoexcited carriers to local magnetic moments. This research is important as it explores the possibility of controlling magnetism using light, which has potential applications in high-speed and low-power spintronic devices.

Ab Initio Study of Helicity-Dependent Light-Induced Demagnetization: From the Optical Regime to the Extreme Ultraviolet Regime

Philippe Scheid et al.

Summary: This research utilized ab initio real-time time-dependent density functional theory to study the impact of optical and extreme ultraviolet circularly polarized femtosecond pulses on the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic materials. It was found that the light-induced helicity-dependent reduction of magnetization was more pronounced in the XUV regime, where 3p semicore states were involved. The study also separated the effects of absorption and the inverse Faraday effect on magnetization dynamics, showing that the former had a greater impact overall, especially in the XUV regime.

Evidence for metastable photo-induced superconductivity in K3C60

M. Budden et al.

Summary: Evidence for light-induced superconductivity in K3C60 was previously limited to optical methods due to the short lifetime of the phase, but extending the lifetime has allowed for measurement of negligible electrical resistance. Excitation of high-Tc cuprates and certain organic superconductors with far-infrared optical pulses has been shown to create non-equilibrium states consistent with high-temperature superconductivity, with these phases becoming metastable under sustained optical driving.

Exchange-Striction Driven Ultrafast Nonthermal Lattice Dynamics in NiO

Y. W. Windsor et al.

Summary: The study investigates ultrafast lattice dynamics in NiO using femtosecond electron diffraction, identifying a nonthermal lattice state with preferential displacement of O compared to Ni ions. This nonthermal state occurs within approximately 0.3 ps and lasts for 25 ps, highlighting the role of spin-lattice coupling in achieving ultrafast control of spin order.

Interlayer electronic coupling on demand in a 2D magnetic semiconductor

Nathan P. Wilson et al.

Summary: Interlayer hybridization in 2D van der Waals materials can change their properties, such as the coupling in CrSBr which can be changed by switching the magnetic order. The stacking of monolayers of 2D materials can introduce new properties, like moire bands and highly correlated electronic states.
