Physical activity measured by accelerometry among adolescents participating in sports clubs and non-participating peers

K. Toivo et al.

Summary: This study describes the amount and intensity of physical activity measured by accelerometry among adolescents participating in organized sports and their non-participating peers. The study found that participating in organized sports makes it easier to meet the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily.

Physical inactivity and non-communicable disease burden in low-income, middle-income and high-income countries

Peter T. Katzmarzyk et al.

Summary: Physical inactivity is a significant risk factor for premature mortality and various non-communicable diseases globally. The burden associated with physical inactivity is substantial, with 7.2% and 7.6% of all-cause and cardiovascular disease deaths attributed to it. While the relative burden is highest in high-income countries, the absolute burden affects the most people in middle-income countries due to their population size.

Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity from young adulthood to middle age and metabolic disease: a 30-year population-based cohort study

Jason M. Nagata et al.

Summary: The study found that lower MVPA scores in adolescence were associated with increased risk of diabetes and dyslipidemia in adulthood. Additionally, for each annual unit reduction in MVPA scores, there was an increased risk of diabetes and high triglyceride levels. Analyzing various MVPA trajectory groups showed that individuals who were most active in adolescence but experienced sharp declines in midlife had higher odds of developing certain metabolic diseases compared to those who maintained high activity levels.

Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity Levels and Patterns Vary in an Age- and Sex-Dependent Fashion among Finnish Children and Adolescents

Anne-Mari Jussila et al.

Summary: The majority of Finnish children and adolescents in this study were not physically active enough, with a significant amount of sedentary behavior observed. There were differences in physical activity levels and patterns between children and adolescents, as well as between boys and girls. Variation in physical activity patterns was also found between weekdays and weekends.

It is never too late to start: adherence to physical activity recommendations for 11-22 years and risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. The HUNT Study

Trine Moholdt et al.

Summary: Individuals who remained, or became, physically inactive had substantially greater risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality compared with those who met the physical activity recommendations throughout the lifespan.

Physical inactivity from youth to adulthood and adult cardiometabolic risk profile

Petri Kallio et al.

Summary: The study found that persistent physical inactivity from adolescence is associated with an unfavorable cardiometabolic risk profile in adulthood. Persistent physical activity is related to decreasing obesity and reducing cardiometabolic risk.

Is device-measured vigorous physical activity associated with health-related outcomes in children and adolescents? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The study indicates that vigorous-intensity physical activity (VPA) is negatively associated with overall adiposity and cardiometabolic risk score, and positively associated with cardiorespiratory fitness and total body bone mineral density in children and adolescents.

Physical activity from adolescence to young adulthood: patterns of change, and their associations with activity domains and sedentary time

Tuula Aira et al.

Summary: Longitudinal studies show a decline in physical activity from adolescence to young adulthood. Different subgroups of adolescents have varying activity patterns, with differences in sports club participation and active commuting influencing their PA patterns. Tailored physical activity promotion strategies are recommended based on these findings.

Physical activity behaviours in adolescence: current evidence and opportunities for intervention

Esther M. F. van Sluijs et al.

Summary: Young people aged 10-24 years make up a significant portion of the global population, but research on adolescent physical activity is lacking. Majority of adolescents are insufficiently active, with many engaging in over 2 hours of recreational screen time daily.

The associations between adolescents' sports club participation and dietary habits

Laura Heikkila et al.

Summary: The study found that adolescent sports club participants are more likely to have healthy dietary habits compared to non-participants, such as eating breakfast on weekends, consuming vegetables and fat-free or semi-skimmed milk daily. However, both groups exhibit deficiencies in unhealthy dietary habits, with no significant difference between them. Opportunities for promoting healthy eating in adolescents through sports clubs should be explored.

Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity trajectories during adolescence and young adulthood predict adiposity in young adulthood: The Iowa Bone Development Study

Minsuk Oh et al.

Summary: This study showed that individuals who consistently engaged in high-intensity physical activity from adolescence to early young adulthood had lower levels of body adiposity in young adulthood. Adopting an active lifestyle throughout adolescence may lead to healthier body composition in young adulthood.
