Dynamic Tensile Response of a Microwave Damaged Granitic Rock

X. Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of microwave irradiation on the dynamic tensile strength, full-field displacement distribution, and average fracture energy of granitic rock. Experimental results show that microwave irradiation significantly weakens the dynamic tensile properties of the rock, with tensile strength increasing with loading rate and decreasing with irradiation duration. Additionally, a new approach for calculating average fracture energy based on DIC analysis is proposed, highlighting the dependency of overload ratio and fracture energy on loading rate and irradiation duration.

Combined numerical and experimental studies on the dynamic and quasi-static failure modes of brittle rock

Chunjiang Zou et al.

Summary: Loading rate affects both the mechanical properties and cracking behavior of rock. Experimental studies show that compressive and tensile strengths are rate-dependent, and cracking processes are also influenced by loading rate. A proposed material model based on experimental data is used to study the influence of rate-dependent strength on cracking behavior comprehensively through numerical simulations. The results reveal how rate-dependent strength affects fracturing behavior and the failure stress of the specimens.

Effect of microwave treatment on thermal properties and structural degradation of red sandstone in rock excavation

Junhui Yao et al.

Summary: Research on weakening rocks using microwave irradiation has been ongoing for the past 50 years. The study found that increasing microwave power improved heating rate and energy concentration on rock fragmentation, leading to increased porosity and forming fractures within the rock. Furthermore, microwave treatment reduced intragranular fractures, indicating that rock damage was a result of the development of intragranular fractures.

Why are tensile cracks suppressed under dynamic loading?-Transition strain rate for failure mode

Chunjiang Zou et al.

Summary: Dynamic loading significantly affects the mechanical properties and cracking behaviors of rocks, with tensile strength being more sensitive to strain rate and tensile cracks being suppressed. The model proposed in this paper successfully explains the difference in fracturing behaviors under quasi-static and dynamic loadings. The well-correlation between experimental and modelling results indicates the potential of the model to quantitatively analyze complex macroscopic problems involving high strain rates.

Summary: The study introduces a nested spherical mechanical model to address deficiencies in prior models of microwave-assisted rock fracturing. The distribution of stress is found to be uniquely linked to thermal stress coupling coefficients and the geometric dimensions of the three zones. Maximum tensile stress is observed at the inner boundary of the T zone or a short distance from the H zone.

Nanoparticles assisted microwave radiation: Fluid-rock interactions in oil reservoirs

Hamzeh Shamsi Armandi et al.

Summary: Recent research has focused on the usage of electromagnetic waves in oil production and well stimulation, with a new study investigating the effect of these waves on fluid-rock interaction and the presence of nanoparticles. The results show that microwave irradiation can reduce the oil contact angle with carbonate rock significantly, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles can extract up to 75% of oil from the rock. Furthermore, the optimal irradiation time for viscosity reduction is 5 minutes, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles exhibit the most significant oil viscosity reduction.
