The use of feed-forward and cascade-forward neural networks to determine swelling potential of clayey soils

Dulguun Narmandakh et al.

Summary: This article presents the use of neural network models to predict the swelling potential of clay soils, including both natural and artificial soils. The models were trained using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and validated with experimental data, showing that the feed-forward neural network trained with this algorithm is the most accurate.

Designing Tunnel Lining in Anhydritic Claystones. Intensity and Distribution of Swelling Forces

E. Alonso et al.

Summary: This paper presents a procedure for designing tunnel linings in anhydritic formations, considering three-dimensional effects and spatial heterogeneity. The methodology is validated through the analysis of monitoring data from the Lilla tunnel lining. This approach can prevent conservatism in assuming uniform pressures against the lining and using two-dimensional models.

Petrographic Record and Conditions of Expansive Hydration of Anhydrite in the Recent Weathering Zone at the Abandoned Dingwall Gypsum Quarry, Nova Scotia, Canada

Adrian Jarzyna et al.

Summary: This article investigates the weathering process of the Carboniferous Windsor Group anhydrite deposits in the Dingwall gypsum quarry in Nova Scotia, Canada. The study reveals that the anhydrite undergoes hydration, transforming into secondary gypsum, resulting in an increase in volume and deformation of the quarry bottom. The growth of secondary gypsum crystals and their relationship with the anhydrite distribution are also observed.

Modeling Solubility of Anhydrite and Gypsum in Aqueous Solutions: Implications for Swelling of Clay-Sulfate Rocks

Reza Taherdangkoo et al.

Summary: The swelling of clay-sulfate rocks is a threat to geotechnical projects, and this study uses neural network models to determine the solubility of gypsum. The results show that the model is accurate and can be used to solve engineering problems related to clay-sulfate rock swelling.

Coupled Hydro-Mechanical Modeling of Swelling Processes in Clay-Sulfate Rocks

Reza Taherdangkoo et al.

Summary: Swelling of clay-sulfate rocks is a serious geo-hazard that can cause damage to infrastructure. Understanding the underlying swelling processes is crucial for safe design and construction. By developing a coupled hydro-mechanical model, the observed heave in Staufen, Germany was accurately reproduced.
