Alleviation of honeycomb print-through of NiP/Cu coated carbon fiber composite mirror via robot-arm wheel polishing

Summary: To achieve a higher lightweight rate, CFRP composites were used to fabricate a mirror with a NiP coating. The paper also discussed honeycomb print-through. Before NiP coating plating, a Cu film was prepared to enhance adherence with CFRP mirror. The NiP coating, which contained 10.9% phosphorus, exhibited an amorphous structure. Classical polish showed obvious honeycomb print-through, resulting in a final surface accuracy of 0.048 lambda (RMS). However, Robot-arm wheel polishing was able to alleviate the print-through, achieving a surface accuracy of 0.015 lambda (RMS) on a 0100mm CFRP mirror.
