Microstructural characterisation and analysis of coarse aggregates in asphalt drill cores

Tim Teutsch et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the three-dimensional characterisation of coarse aggregates (d ≥ 2 mm) within real asphalt structures using micro X-ray Computed Tomography (mu XRCT). The method presented in this paper accurately segments the aggregates from other asphalt mixture components and provides basic data on their size, form, structure, and orientation. The analysis of these data reveals that the positioning of aggregates is evenly distributed, but their orientation behavior is influenced by their shape characteristics.

Studying the impact of aggregates and mix volumetric properties on the moisture resistance of asphalt concrete using a feed-Forward artificial neural network

M. A. Dalhat et al.

Summary: Several studies have focused on the impact of additives on the moisture resistance of AC, but few have explored the influence of aggregate properties. This study investigates the effect of aggregate properties and mix volumetric properties on the moisture sensitivity of AC. The study uses 319 plant-produced asphalt mixture samples and models the moisture sensitivity based on the Retained Stability Index (RSI) using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The relationship between the variables and RSI follows higher order polynomial functions.

Measuring aggregate morphologies based on three-dimensional curvature analysis

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a morphological analysis method based on three-dimensional curvature analysis, where the values of maximum curvature and standard deviation of Gaussian curvature on the aggregate surface represent angularity and texture. The accuracy ranking places the curvature method above the image and profile methods, with potential to accurately quantify aggregate morphologies and contribute to mixture design.

Relationships between internal structure and surface texture of asphalt mixtures

Sen Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates how the distribution of internal phases of asphalt mixture affects pavement surface texture. By using the 2D-IISAM method, the internal structure properties of 28 different asphalt mixtures were evaluated and their corresponding surface texture properties were established. The results suggest significant influence of internal structural properties on surface texture, leading to regression relationships to predict surface texture from internal structure and vice versa.
