Deformation damage and acoustic emission characteristics of red sandstone under fatigue-creep interaction

Ju Wang et al.

Summary: Most engineering rock masses are under the interaction of fatigue load and creep load. Understanding of the fatigue or creep characteristics of rock is relatively mature, but the damage and failure characteristics under fatigue-creep interaction (FCI) are rarely studied. The study on red sandstone with prefabricated cracks showed that the elastic modulus tended to be stable, while the deformation modulus decreased nonlinearly after creep loading. Acoustic emission (AE) mainly occurred in the fatigue loading stage, and the level of AE increased with the crack angle. These research results have theoretical reference value for understanding the damage and failure characteristics of fractured rock mass under interaction.

Stability Characteristics of Horizontal Wells in the Exploitation of Hydrate-Bearing Clayey-Silt Sediments

Xiaofeng Sun et al.

Summary: This paper studies the stability characteristics of a deviated borehole in hydrate-bearing clayey-silt sediments. The wellbore stability is analyzed using the Mohr-Coulomb criterion and Drucker-Prager criterion, based on the elastic stress distribution model and triaxial shear test results. The study finds that the collapse pressure and safety density window are symmetrically distributed with deviation angle and azimuth. Considering the effect of hydrate decomposition, the collapse pressure gradient could become higher and increase instability risks. Therefore, it is suggested to arrange the borehole along an azimuth of 60-120 degrees to reduce drilling risks.

Research on nonlinear damage hardening creep model of soft surrounding rock under the stress of deep coal resources mining

Zhou Jiaxing et al.

Summary: This study investigates the creep mechanical behavior of deep soft rock coal seam and proposes a nonlinear damage and hardening creep model. The rock's creep exhibits sudden changes, with crystal particle cracks leading to rock mass damage and grain movement along cavities causing hardening. The creep model accurately predicts accelerated failure and long-term strength, providing a theoretical basis for soft rock creep laws and ensuring the stability of energy extraction projects.

Influences of hydrate layered distribution patterns on triaxial shearing characteristics of hydrate-bearing sediments

Yanlong Li et al.

Summary: The study conducted experiments to analyze the mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments with horizontally distributed hydrates, revealing that the behavior of sediment during shearing is mainly determined by the lower hydrate-saturated sub-layer.

AE monitoring-based CO2 hydrate formation and its influences to hydrate-bearing sandy sediments

Xiaodong Zhao et al.

Summary: Acoustic emission monitoring is effective in detecting the formation of CO2 hydrates in sediments, with AE parameters increasing gradually during the formation process. The formation of CO2 hydrates and friction in pure sediments contribute to an increase in AE amplitude.

Elastic wave velocities of hydrate-bearing sands containing methane gas bubbles: Insights from CT-acoustic observation and theoretical analysis

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the elastic wave velocities of hydrate-bearing sediments were investigated, revealing that the BGTL model is most accurate for hydrate saturation exceeding 45%, while the EMT-B model is more suitable for hydrate saturation ranging from 15% to 55%. The STPE model, without considering gas effects, overestimated the P-wave velocity. Additionally, a modified STPE model combining Wood and Domenico equations was proposed to improve the precision and applicability for predicting V-p in unconsolidated reservoirs.

Mechanical properties of the clayey-silty sediment-natural gas hydrate mixed system

Li Yanlong et al.

Summary: This study examines the mechanical parameters of hydrate reservoirs in the Shenhu area of the South China Sea, finding that clayey-silty sediments with lower hydrate mass fractions exhibit strainhardening failure characteristics, while pure THF hydrates show a brittle failure mode with higher hydrate mass fractions.

A comparative study on natural gas hydrate accumulation models at active and passive continental margins

Hu Gaowei et al.

Summary: The study shows that active continental margins provide more vertical gas migration channels, better storage space, and greater vertical stress, promoting hydrate accumulation. In contrast, passive continental margins lack lateral stress, but plastic materials and high-pressure fluids within thick sediment layers can still lead to hydrate accumulation.

Characterization and development of natural gas hydrate in marine clayey-silt reservoirs: A review and discussion

Yanlong Li et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the basic methods for natural gas hydrate reservoir characterization and development, and discusses the applicability of these methods in marine clayey-silt natural gas hydrate reservoirs. Current development methods are restricted by low gas productivity, potential geomechanical instability, and extremely high costs.
