What matters and influence resuscitation preference? Development, field testing, and structural validation of items among older patients in the emergency department

Stine Hanson et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the factors and dimensionality that influence resuscitation preference among older Emergency Department (ED) patients. It was found that the spiritual dimension was not important, and independence may be a key factor in determining patients' resuscitation preference. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between independence and patients' choices of resuscitation preference.

Advance care planning in older hospitalised patients following an emergency admission: A mixed methods study

Anna-Maria Bielinska et al.

Summary: This study found that approximately 1 in 5 patients aged 70+ admitted to hospital as an emergency are in the last year of life. Acute hospitalization can act as a trigger for tailored advance care planning. Older hospitalized patients believe that advance care planning can benefit physical and psychosocial health and that discussions should consider a spectrum of possibilities, from future health to the potential of chronic illness, disability, and death.
