Visceral adiposity and respiratory outcomes in children and adults: a systematic review

Tong Wu et al.

Summary: This review examines the associations of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) with pulmonary function, asthma, and COPD. The findings show that in adults, higher abdominal VAT is associated with asthma, and higher intrathoracic VAT is linked to lower lung function parameters. However, there is limited research on the relationship between VAT and COPD.

Characterization of Asthma by Age of Onset: A Multi-Database Cohort Study

Esme J. Baan et al.

Summary: This study reveals the differences in characteristics among patients with childhood, adult, and late-onset asthma. Compared to childhood asthma, adult-onset asthma patients are more likely to be overweight/obese, while late-onset asthma patients are more likely to have nasal polyposis, overweight/obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and diabetes. There is a significant association between late-onset asthma and uncontrolled asthma.

Nicolas Bermudez Baron et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of BMI change on lung function in patients with asthma. The results show that overweight and obese patients have slower decline in lung function, and BMI increase is closely associated with lung function decline.

Challenging the obesity paradox: extreme obesity and COPD mortality in the SUMMIT trial

Emily P. Brigham et al.

Summary: A study found that individuals with moderate COPD and heightened cardiovascular risk had higher mortality rates if underweight, while lower mortality rates were observed in overweight and obese class I individuals. However, mortality rates increased in individuals with class III obesity, primarily due to cardiovascular causes.
