Pulmonary barotrauma in COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Dhan Bahadur Shrestha et al.

Summary: COVID-19 pneumonia is associated with a higher incidence of barotrauma, which is linearly related to the severity of the disease. Barotrauma is associated with a longer length of hospital stay, extended ICU stay, and higher in-hospital mortality. There is a slightly higher odds of barotrauma in COVID-19 ARDS compared with non-COVID-19 ARDS.

COVID-19 mortality in Italy varies by patient age, sex and pandemic wave

Francesca Minnai et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the Italian national database and found that age, sex, and infection timing had an impact on COVID-19 mortality. Specifically, older age was the most significant risk factor, male sex had a higher risk of death than female sex, and being infected during the first wave was associated with higher mortality risk.

Evaluation of Patients Who Developed Pneumothorax Due to COVID-19

Gokhan Corapli et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics and risk factors of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who developed pneumothorax. It found that advanced age and male gender increase the risk of pneumothorax, while smoking, sepsis, and mechanical ventilation do not increase this risk. Additionally, the presence of comorbidity is associated with higher mortality rates in these patients.

Summary: This study found a higher relative frequency of SP in patients with COVID-19, with SP patients more likely to have symptoms such as dyspnea, chest pain, and abnormal vital signs. The incidence of SP was significantly higher in COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 patients, and SP in COVID-19 patients was associated with worse outcomes than in both non-COVID-19 patients with SP and COVID-19 patients without SP.

The incidence, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of pneumothorax in hospitalized COVID-19 patients: A systematic review

Summary: Pneumothorax is a rare complication in hospitalized COVID-19 patients but has a significantly higher incidence in those requiring invasive mechanical ventilation, with a mortality rate up to 100%. Delayed diagnosis, increased risk of ICU admission, and death are associated with COVID-19-related pneumothorax, especially in elderly patients.

Matteo Bonato et al.

Summary: Pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum are potential complications of COVID-19 associated with a worse prognosis in terms of mortality and length of hospitalization. Although more frequent in ventilated patients, they can also occur in non-ventilated patients, suggesting mechanisms other than barotrauma might contribute to their presentation.

Risk Factors for Mortality in COVID-19 Hospitalized Patients in Piedmont, Italy: Results from the Multicenter, Regional, CORACLE Registry

Francesco Giuseppe De Rosa et al.

Summary: The study identified several risk factors associated with mortality in SARS-CoV-2 positive patients, including age, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and others. Factors such as C-reactive protein values and PaO2/FiO2 ratio at admission were also found to impact hospital mortality. Treatment with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was the only factor significantly associated with reduced mortality among patients still alive on day 7, despite conflicting evidence from randomized studies.

Leukocyte trafficking to the lungs and beyond: lessons from influenza for COVID-19

Ronen Alon et al.

Summary: The understanding of COVID-19 clinical manifestations requires knowledge of how immune cells are recruited to virus-infected lungs and how this recruitment varies among individuals. The orchestration of leukocyte trafficking to respiratory system is controlled by specific molecules, which can lead to pathological complications when uncontrolled. The incomplete understanding of trafficking signals in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection calls for further research for potential therapeutic interventions.
