Attributional and consequential LCAs of a novel bio-jet fuel from Dutch potato by-products

Christian Moretti et al.

Summary: Bio-jet fuels from bio-based by-products are viewed as a promising alternative to mitigate the climate change impact of aviation. This study utilized both attributional and consequential life cycle assessment (LCA) models to evaluate an innovative bio-jet fuel produced from potato by-products in the Netherlands, which led to contrasting conclusions on the overall environmental performance. While consequential LCA had higher uncertainties, it provided insights into the consequences of additional animal feed production, which was not considered in the system boundaries of attributional LCA.

Frass derived from black soldier fly larvae treatment of biodegradable wastes. A critical review and future perspectives

Iva Guidini Lopes et al.

Summary: Inadequately treated biodegradable waste poses a threat to the environment, society, and economy. Waste treatment using black soldier fly larvae offers the possibility of transforming these wastes into marketable products and promoting circular economy. However, there are still many unknown aspects regarding the processing residues, such as their composition, behavior in soil, and impact on plant metabolism.

Sustainable fisheries: Towards operationalization of decision making accounting for biodiversity

Gregoire Gaillet et al.

Summary: The overexploitation of biotic resources poses a major threat to marine biodiversity, while the demand for seafood continues to increase. This study applies existing methods of fishing impact assessment to 125 common fish stocks and proposes guidelines for sustainable production and conservation policies. The findings highlight the unsustainable fishing practices that result in significant loss of fish stocks and identify depleted stocks and those facing excessive fishing mortality. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need for further data collection and analysis to improve our understanding of the consequences of overfishing.

Black soldier fly larvae for organic manure recycling and its potential for a circular bioeconomy: A review

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of the potential of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) for recycling organic waste from livestock farming. It discusses various aspects such as manure bioconversion, the application of BSFL in organic farming, and the process performance of biomolecule degradation. The review also explores the economic feasibility, lifecycle assessment, and circular bioeconomy of using BSFL in manure recycling, as well as future perspectives for its application.

A biorefinery concept using forced chicory roots for the production of biogas, hydrochar, and platform chemicals

Katrin Stoekle et al.

Summary: Forced chicory roots can be utilized in a cascaded manner by extracting sugars, hydrothermal carbonization, and anaerobic digestion, achieving a complete utilization of the biomass. This cascaded utilization can elongate the value chain of chicory and enhance the efficiency of biomass usage, with a carbon efficiency of 96%.

Environmental aspects of insect mass production

S. Smetana et al.

Summary: This study aims to systematize previous research to establish a modular framework for determining the contribution of sustainability assessment factors in insect production chains. By analyzing studies based on elements of LCA, a feasible approach for modeling insect production chains was identified, which can facilitate comparability in future LCA studies.

Black soldier fly reared on pig manure: Bioconversion efficiencies, nutrients in the residual material, greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions

Alejandro Parodi et al.

Summary: The study found that with the presence of black soldier fly larvae, more carbon dioxide and ammonia-nitrogen were emitted compared to when the larvae were absent. Methane emissions, the main contributor to greenhouse gases, were produced at the same levels in both treatments, indicating the significant role of manure microbial methane emissions. The uptake of nutrients by the larvae and the higher carbon dioxide and ammonia emissions significantly altered the nutrient composition of the residual material relative to fresh manure.
